BYU DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND MEDIA ARTS A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR BYU COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND MEDIA ARTS A theatrical “convention” is a device used by playwrights and directors to help tell a story. Some conventions are as basic as the notion of actors remaining on the stage and an audience in the theatre. Other widely accepted conventions include characters speaking to one another while pretending not to notice the audience. Subtler conventions, such as actors freezing on stage in one position while others continue with movement and dialogue, are also frequently employed. Theatre goers tend to recognize and readily accept such conventions and devices as part of the storytelling milieu. PRESENT THE UNITED STATES PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF CHARIOTS OF FIRE Stage Adaptation By MIKE BARTLETT In fact, you may have noticed as you came into the theatre that there are bleachers on the stage being occupied by audience members. (You may even be one of those audience members!) You may have also noticed a row or two of seats in the theatre have been replaced with a series of platforms. As a result, you might be thinking the staging of the American premiere of Chariots of Fire may not be typical, adhering to normal conventions—and you would be correct! I tend to like things in nice, orderly packages. So, in directing a play, I strive to utilize a single theatrical convention/device at least three times in a production. Something about the number three seems to justify the use of a convention and allow it to become part of what we refer to as the production’s concept. The repeated use of a convention or device helps the audience know what to expect and become familiar with the style of storytelling. However, I have observed that British theatre practitioners view the notion of convention and concept a bit differently. UK productions, such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, brilliantly use just about every storytelling device and convention imaginable, and often only once during a production. Since Chariots of Fire On Stage (seen only during the 2012 London Olympics) is based on the famous 1981 British film, I am taking my directorial cues from this British tradition and using a host of conventions and devices whenever and wherever they support the story of Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams and the 1924 Olympics. I trust this more British approach to theatrical conventions and storytelling results in a production that is visually captivating and spiritually engaging—and heartpounding as well. —Tim Threlfall, director Based on the Enigma Productions Limited motion picture By arrangement with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation And Allied Stars S.A.
