November/December, 2009 CHRISTMAS EDITION The Spotlight St Luke’s Theatre Society Newsletter Volume 6, Issue 7 PLAY No. 4 - “LEND ME A TENOR” The close of our successful 2009 season saw the presentation of the play Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig - directed by Trevor Bond. This was a fast-moving farce, that centred on two Othellos running around a split set, a panic-stricken manager of an opera company, a defiant daughter, a triumphant assistant, a mad-keen bellhop, an ambitious soprano, a temperamental opera star and his wife and a giddy guild president. The set was beautifully constructed and painted by ’Dad’s Army.’ Barry Kratzke was responsible for the wonderful décor - simple but so effective for a luxury hotel suite. Trevor was more than pleased with the performance for every cast member, and received many favourable comments accordingly. The cast deserved Oscars and were presented with these Oscars closing night. A play just doesn’t ’happen’ and so many people worked backstage and front of house to make the play a success. Special thanks go to David Shanklin and Chris Bradley for stepping into roles that were vacated, for various reasons, by the original actors and to Michael Byrnes for joining us from Villanova Players. In fact, several things seemed to doom the production - director in hospital, accidents and limited time for Dad’s Army to construct and paint the set, but teamwork prevailed in the end and the play was quite a success. Lend Me A Tenor was a fitting 2009 finale. Play No.1 has definitely been finalised and this will be the comedy One Foot in the Door by Richard Harris and directed by Don Hobbs. This promises to be a grand opening to our 2010 season. This is the kind of play that our audiences thrive on - a fast moving comedy. Our first Greenroom production is also yet to be finalised. These Greenrooms are meant to give new-comers experience on our stage, aided by some seasoned performers. Our second major play for 2010 too, has yet to be finalised, but should be ‘in the can’ soon. Probably this play will be a comedy or a farce, as they are very much enjoyed by our audiences. For our third major this year, for a change and because of requests from patrons, we are presenting a drama, a classic dark murder mystery by Agatha Christie. The play is A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED and is to be directed by Peter Parkinson. WHAT’S ON …. Peter Parkinson is seeking a recording for a future production and if you can help, that would be appreciated. Contact Peter on 3255 0221. He’s not sure of the title of the song nor the singer, but it could be Al Bowlly and the lyrics go something like this:“Is it a sin, is it a crime? Loving you like I do? If it’s a sin, then I’m guilty Guilty of loving you.” CHANGE OF EDITOR After five years of producing the Spotlight, I feel I need a change, and so this will be my last issue as editor. I will be handing the newsletter over to another committee member, yet to be announced. I would like to thank everyone for their five years of support and happy reading. It has been a thrilling adventure, but I feel that change is in the wind. I hope our readers will continue to support the Spotlight as I feel it’s a vital part of any society - that news gets around and is reported. She and husband David have been active in St. Luke’s Theatre since its inception. CAREER: Joan appeared in the very first three-act play for St. Luke’s. This was Happy Days in 1960. She probably was the only one of the cast who could manage an American accent. In 1962 Joan and David took the leads in Murder Out of Tune. Joan also enjoyed her role in Lillies of the Field in the early days and performing in the Noel Coward plays. Joan really enjoyed the musicals and often performed in the chorus - White Horse Inn [1978] Viva Mexico [1980] No No a Million Times No [1979] Salad Days [1987] and many more. Joan was also always willing to fill in, often at short notice, in other roles throughout the years. With a growing family of four sons, Joan’s involvement dropped during this period. She and David also provided their home for Theatre functions and after play parties. Joan’s accomplishments included often providing props [artistic oil painting] and costumes [dressmaking for various plays.] One of Joan’s real regrets was that she was never able to be the Theatre Society’s Wardrobe Mistress, but she did make some very impressive costumes, mostly for David and for the musical Viva Volume 6, Issue 7 Mexico in particular. For many years too, Joan was the Theatre’s coordinator of the World Vision charity, which supported children in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In recent years Joan also helped at Front of House and was always a strong supporter of all St. Luke’s functions. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT ON STAGE: In one play Joan was asked to stand in for a sick actor playing a character that pulled a revolver and held up a collection of characters. One night, with script in hand, Joan, with horror, lost the place and had to make up the lines while waving the revolver around. REMEMBERING JOAN: Sadly, in recent years, Joan had been battling her illness and earlier this year, she passed away. Joan will always be remembered as a very good friend and a valued member of St. Luke’s Theatre Society. She was an extremely likeable, unobtrusive lady who was always ready to give any assistance she was able to provide. St Luke’s thanks her and notes that she will be sadly missed. St Luke’s Giving excellence in Theatre FROM OUR PRESIDENT—BARRY KRATZKE As all hall users have finally submitted dates for 2010, the church committee has now been able to confirm our play dates for the coming year. The dates are published in this edition of ‘The Spotlight’. I thank Jan for setting the schedule for the year as many factors come into play when arranging dates. The theatre program for the year is almost complete and should be by the time this newsletter reaches you. We will have the usual four major plays and two greenroom productions. While we realize most of our audiences prefer comedies, we do have many requests for drama, so this year the third major play will be an Agatha Christie directed by Peter Parkinson. Don Hobbs will direct the first major play, ‘One Foot In The Door’, in March. The titles of the 2010 plays will be on our website and in the first issue of the 2010 ‘Spotlight’. I hope you like our selection. I would like to take this opportunity thank you all for your support during 2009 and to wish you all a Holy and joyous Christmas.
