Word Root
•
Words evolve in different ways.
•
The quickest, most useful and easiest way to increase your word power is to analyze how
the words are put together.
•
The basic word or ‘root’ is the building block which is not a word itself, but is combined
with other elements to form words.
Examples
Roots : ‘anthrop’, ‘anthropo’, – means ‘man; human’
‘ology’ means ‘the science or study of’
‘phil’ mean love
‘mis’ means ‘hate, hatred’
‘gyne’ means ‘pertaining to woman’
Thus,
Anthropology means study of humans/mankind.
Philanthropy’ means love for humans/mankind.
Misanthrope is a person who hates mankind.
Misogynist is a person who hates woman.
Origin
•
Root: ‘vit-’ or viv-’ – means ‘life’ or ‘to live’.

Root: ‘ced’, ‘cede’, ‘ceed’ or ‘cess’ means ‘to go; yield’

Prefix
•
A prefix consists of a letter or group of letters placed before a root or word to alter its
meaning.
E.g. ‘bene’ meaning ‘good’ is typically attached to the beginning of a word , as in
benevolent, benefactor, benefit etc.
Categories of Prefixes -1
•
Made up of mostly Latin and Greek words that have the meaning of English
prepositions.
E.g.
•
‘Ante’(before) in Antecent
•
‘Circum’ (round) in Circumvent
•
‘Com’(with together) in Combine
•
‘Intra’(within, inside of’) in Intranet
•
‘Sub’(under) in Substandard
•
‘Super’(above in position) in Superior
Categories-2
•
Second category serves to give a negative meaning to a word or to reverse and undo an
action.
E.g.
•
‘Dis’(state of not being at ease) in Disease
•
‘In’ (not capable) in Inability
•
‘Mal’ (failure to function properly) in Malfunction
•
‘Non’(not) Non-inflammable
Categories 3&4
•
Third category have to do with amount , number or degree
E.g.
•
‘Hyper’(excessive) in Hyperactive
•
‘Mis’(wrong) in Misinform
•
‘Bi(both) in Bicuspid
•
This category consist of common English words such as ‘extra’ as in extraordinary ,
‘out’ as in outspoken; over as in overweight.

Suffix
•
It is usually added on to a root or word after the primary meaning of the word has been
established by the basic root and prefix.

They serve to tell you whether a word is used as an action word(verb), modifier(adjective
or adverb), or the name of a person, place or thing(noun); and they serve to distinguish
between thing, a number and tense.
