Jesus is Baptised and Tempted The Baptism of Jesus Then Jesus arrived at the Jordan from Galilee, and came to John to be baptised by him. John tried to dissuade him. “Do you come to me?” he said; “I need rather to be baptised by you”. Jesus replied, “Let it be so for the present; we do well to conform in this way with all that God requires”. John then allowed him to come. After baptism Jesus came up out of the water at once, and at that moment heaven opened; he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove to alight upon him; and a voice from heaven was heard saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, on whom my favour rests”. MATTHEW 3, verses 13-17 His Temptation Jesus was then led away by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. For forty days and nights he fasted, and at the end of them he was famished. The tempter approached him and said, “if you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘Man cannot live on bread alone; he lives on every word that God utters.’” The devil then took him to the Holy City and set him on the parapet of the temple. “If you are the Son of God’, he said, ‘throw yourself down; for Scripture says, “He will put his angels in charge of you, and they will support you in their arms for fear you should strike your foot against a stone”. Jesus answered him, “Scripture says again, “You are not to put the Lord your God to the test”’. Once again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory. “All these”, he said, “I will give you, if you will only fall down and do me homage.” But Jesus said, “Begone Satan! Role-plays between a merchant (greedy) and follower of Muhammad showing Muhammad’s teachings about worshipping idols, being greedy etc. The Early Life of Muhammad Muhammad's father died before Muhammad was born and his mother died when he was 6 years old. So, Muhammad was left as an orphan and was brought up, first by his Grandfather and later by his Uncle, Abu Talib. Abu Talib was a merchant, but he was different to the many other Arab merchants, as he was well respected and was not rich and powerful, like so many others in Mecca. When he was older, Muhammad, like his Uncle, became a merchant. As a young man, Muhammad was reliable and honest and was nicknamed "al-Amin", which means "the trustworthy one". When Muhammad was about 25, a widow called Khadijah put him in charge of some of her business deals. Muhammad worked very hard for Khadijah and she began to admire him. Later they were married and continued to live in Mecca. The Night of Power During his marriage to Khadijah, Muhammad slowly began to change. He began to feel that the idol-worship of the Arabs was wrong and he started to think more about monotheism (belief in only one God). Also, the fact that many Arabs were very poor, while the rich merchants made more and more money for themselves, made Muhammad very sad. He liked to retreat (go to be alone and think) to the mountains outside Mecca, and think about what he could do about the problem in Mecca. It was during one of these retreats that something extraordinary happened: When Muhammad was about 40 years old, in the year 610 CE, he was in a cave on Mount Hira, just outside Mecca, when the Angel Gabriel appeared to him. Words which seemed to be on fire appeared, and the angel commanded Muhammad to read them. Muslims believe that Muhammad could not read, but on this night he knew in his heart what the words said: "Read! In the name of your Lord Who created man from a clot of blood Read! And your Lord is the Most Gracious One Who taught by the pen Who taught mankind what he did not know." (The Qur'an, Surah 96, verses 1-5) These were the first verses revealed to Muhammad from Allah, and over the next 23 years of his life, Muhammad received many more revelations like this. The revelations were later written down and became the sacred book of Islam, the Qur'an. Every year, Muslims remember when this first revelation came. They call it "The Night of Power".
