Classification Of Igneous
Rocks
By {Group 2:} Miguel Rivas, Jaden Sears, Azra Gomez,
and Josh Hugill
Types Of Igneous
Rocks
Coarse Grained Rocks
If the magma cools
slowly then it will convert
into an igneous rock with
a coarse grained
texture
Fine Grained
Rocks
If the magma
cools fast then
you can get a fine
coarse rock
Glassy Textured Rock
If lava spews onto the
earth's surface it can
make the atoms arrange
themselves into a
network of crystals
Fun Fact:
The rate of
cooling
affects the
textures of
the rock.
Coarse grained rocks
This rock makes up
most of the earth
The elements in the
magma directly
affect which
minerals are formed
when the magma
cools.
If the magma cools slowly enough, a few
centers of crystal growth happen. You can
even get a coarse grain texture that
allows charged atoms to move large
distances in the magma.
Fine Grained Rocks
When the magma cools quickly the ions in the melted material lose their motion
and quickly combine. When it cools fast it makes rocks with small, interconnected
mineral grains.
Glassy Texture
Igneous Rock has a very glassy texture. It is from when a volcanic eruption is
quenched so rapidly that crystallization cannot occur. So the solids produced this
way are made of randomly distributed ions. The result is their current glassy or
vitreous texture.
Granitic Composition
Granitic
composition are
composed of light
sillitates. The rock
is a light color
because of the 2
other minerals that
make it up- quartz
and feldspar
Quartz
Most granitic rocks have
10% dark silicate minerals
and ~70% silica.
Formed from magma that contained a
lot of silica . Granite is one form of
this.
feldspar
Basaltic Composition
Rocks with many dark silicate minerals and plagioclase feldspar have a basaltic
competition.Basaltic rocks are rich in magnesium and iron, most basaltic rocks are
darker and denser because of their iron content.
Porphyritic Texture
-Large bodies in Earth take a while to harden
-1000 years
-Minerals from this don’t form at the same rate or
time
-Results in large crystals
-They have porphyritic texture
Other Compositional Groups
-Rocks with composition between granitic and basaltic
-have an andesitic composition
Named after andesite
-Ultramafic composition: composed of dark silicate minerals
