OLYMPIAGANZA Musical Comedy WORKPACK LEVEL A2/B1 Waystage to threshold (elementary to intermediate) Characters ZEUS – DIONYSUS – ATHENA – PROMETHEUS – PANDORA – HERCULES – CHIRON – JASON – CASTOR AND POLLUX* - ATALANTA* ORPHEUS* Synopsis This story is based on Greek mythology. The Greek had many Gods. Most of them lived in Mount Olympus. There were also Demigods such as Titans or Heroes. Myths were used to explain natural phenomena, or to instill good values and morals The chapters: Chapter 1: Prometheus, Men and Fire: Prometheus is a Titan, best known as the deity in Greek mythology who was the creator of mankind and its greatest benefactor. He stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to mankind. Zeus was mad at him, because fire allowed humans to protect and warm themselves and helped them forge and create new things, so he feared the Gods will lose power by sharing this gift. Chapter 2: Pandora and the Girl Power: Pandora was the first human woman created by the gods who gave her unique gifts. According to the myth, Pandora´s curiosity led her to open a forbidden box, releasing all the evils of humanity. Pandora’s other gifts, like intelligence and braveness, allowed her to close the box in time, leaving Hope inside as mankind’s last resource. Chapter 3 The Labors of Hercules, Becoming a Hero: Hercules had to train very hard and prove his own worthiness to the Gods in order to achieve the immortality he needed to become a “Hero”. The goddess Hera made him complete twelve labors which include killing a lion and a hydra, capturing a bull, etc. Chapter 4: Jason and the Argonauts. The Original Super Friends: The Argonauts were a band of heroes in Greek mythology, accompanied Jason to visit several islands in his quest to find the Golden Fleece. Their name comes from their ship, the Argo, VOCABULARY (you might teach or revise these words before going to the theatre) ADJECTIVES ANCIENT - EXTRAVAGANT – POWERFUL – WEAK – MAD – DISAPPOINTED – TOUGH – BRAVE – KIND – TENDER – TENACIOUS – EVIL – IMMORTAL - FAITHFUL NOUNS GOD - FIRE – GIFT – CHALLENGE – TITAN – BULL – LION – MISSION – TRAVEL – TROUBLE – VENGEANCE - TWIN – LYRE – HUNTRESS – LABOR – HOPE - CURIOSITY - TRAINER COURAGE - REWARD VERBS PROTECT – REQUEST – SHOUT – YELL – CREATE – DISAPPEAR - EARN - SAVE - DEFEAT - DOOM – SUCCEED – FACE – FORCE - FORGE ACTIVITIES For teachers: This workpack is divided into different levels, taking into account learners’ age and level of language acquired. As you may notice, the same play may cater for an ample age range. This is due to an important innovation meant to suit different students’ needs and interests. This means that while different age groups may be viewing the same play the various pre and post language activities in the workpack attend to a different level. Teachers are thus able to provide students with details about the story and the characters before they come to the theatre, and also with follow-up activities. level1 BEFORE GOING TO THE THEATRE Name .......................................................................................................................................................
