Troubleshooting Page Worksheet
Troubleshooting pages on iFixit help users to diagnose problems with their devices and to find
the best solution or repair for their device. Troubleshooting pages on iFixit can be broken down
into four basic components:
●
Headings, phrased as user-observed problems/symptoms with the device
●
Brief (one-sentence) summaries of these problems
●
Subheadings, phrased as the most common causes of these problems
●
An explanation of the cause and a solution for the problem, written in paragraph
form with links to applicable repair guides
The troubleshooting page layout is designed to be simple and easy to read. As an example, an
excerpt from the troubleshooting page for Han Solo’s BlasTech DL-44 heavy blaster might look
like this (color coding has been added for clarity):
Blaster doesn’t fire
When the trigger is pulled, the blaster doesn’t fire.
Safety is on
The DL-44 is equipped with a safety to prevent accidental firing. The safety is located on
the rear of the hilt, just below the scope. Flip the safety down, into its off position, and try
firing again.
Depleted power pack
The power pack for the DL-44 holds a maximum of 50 shots. If the power pack is out of
energy, the blaster can’t fire. The cautionary pulser in the hilt of the DL-44 should vibrate
when the power pack is down to 5 shots or less. If the cautionary pulser is vibrating, the
power pack should be replaced. Push down on the power pack release lever to release
the depleted power pack. For more help replacing a power pack, follow this guide.
Faulty trigger mechanism
A faulty trigger can prevent the DL-44 from firing properly. The trigger mechanism is
designed to move smoothly when squeezed, and should provide some resistance due to
the trigger spring. If the trigger or trigger spring are broken or bent they can prevent the
trigger from moving normally. With the power pack removed, try squeezing the trigger
several times in succession. If the trigger doesn’t move when squeezed, or moves with
little or no resistance, the trigger mechanism should be replaced by following this guide.
Using the above for reference, answer the following questions:
1. Below are the elements of a single troubleshooting topic for a Lenovo laptop, but they’re
written out of order. Read through these phrases and label them according to their
function on a troubleshooting page. Label each phrase as a problem/heading, summary
sentence, cause/subheading, or explanation text.
●
Faulty power adapter
●
If the adapter is plugged into the wall and the light on the adapter is
on, make sure the adapter is connected to the laptop. If the laptop
only powers up when the adapter is plugged in, regardless of
charging time, then the battery is probably faulty. You can replace
the battery using this guide.
●
The computer will not power on
●
Check to make sure the power adapter is plugged into a functioning
electrical outlet. If it is, make sure the light on the adapter is on. If
the light is not on, and the adapter is plugged in, the adapter is
faulty. Consider purchasing a replacement adapter.
●
The laptop will not respond or show any sign of powering up.

2. Below are three alternate versions of a troubleshooting topic for the iPod 5th Generation.
Identify which version (a, b, or c) best matches the guidelines. Provide reasons for your
choice.
a. Distorted audio
Your iPod turns on and appears to work, but when you plug in headphones or speakers,
the audio sounds strange.
Distorted audio coming from the headphones/speakers
Distorted audio can be caused by faulty headphones or speakers. Test the
headphones or speakers in another device to make sure the audio sounds
normal. Plug a separate set of working headphones or speakers into your iPod. If
the sound is still distorted, the problem is likely with the iPod itself. Distorted audio coming from the audio jack
A common cause of audio output problems on iPods is a faulty audio-out jack. For
help replacing the jack on your iPod, check out our replacement guide.
b. Distorted audio
Your iPod turns on and appears to work, but when you plug in headphones or speakers,
the audio sounds strange.
Bad headphones/speakers
Distorted audio can be caused by faulty headphones or speakers. Test the
headphones or speakers in another device to make sure the audio sounds
normal. Plug a separate set of working headphones or speakers into your iPod. If
the sound is still distorted, the problem is likely with the iPod itself. Bad audio jack
A common cause of audio output problems on iPods is a faulty audio-out jack. For
help replacing the jack on your iPod, check out our replacement guide.
c. Audio issues
There are several audio problems that can potentially occur to your iPod.
Bad headphones/speakers
Distorted audio can be caused by faulty headphones or speakers. If the audio
problem isn’t being caused by the headphones or speakers, the problem is likely
with the iPod itself.
Replace the audio jack
For help replacing the jack on your iPod, check out our replacement guide.
3. Below are the elements of a troubleshooting topic for the LG Xenon smartphone. They
represent the problem/symptom, summary, causes, and explanations/solutions, but are
written out of order. Rewrite them in the correct order to form a properly laid out
troubleshooting topic.
■
Clean the charger of any debris, check for damage, and try plugging it back
in. If that doesn’t work, the charger may be broken and you will have to
replace it.
■
Your phone doesn’t charge when it’s plugged in.
■
Failed battery
■
The LG Xenon will not charge
■
Older batteries may no longer hold a charge. You will need to replace your
battery, following the LG Xenon Battery Replacement guide.
