The Night Sky Stars: A star is a self-‐luminous body in the universe that consists of mainly gas that is held together through its own gravity. The energy created by a star is in the form of nuclear radiation. Some stars are: • Alcor • Bellatrix • Canopus • Decrux • Enif Planet: A planet is a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. Some planets are: • Mercury • Mars • Venus • Earth • Jupiter Satellite: A satellite is a body that revolves around a plant, e.g. a moon Some satellites are: • Europa (Jupiter) • Callisto (Jupiter) • Triton (Neptune) • Galatea (Neptune) • Titania (Uranus) Constellation: A constellation is a recognizable pattern of stars and planets that are visible in the night sky from Earth. Some constellations are: • Ara • Boötes • Crux • Dorado • Eridanus Galaxy: A galaxy is system of millions and billions of stars and planets, with dust and gas, held together a gravitational attraction. Some galaxies are: • Milky Way • Comet Galaxy • Cartwheel Galaxy • Pinwheel Galaxy • Whirlpool Galaxy Comet: A comet is an object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust, and has a visible tail facing away from the Sun. A non-‐periodic comet is only seen once while a periodic comet travels in an elongated elliptical orbit that returns after several years. Some comets are: • 2P/Encke (Periodic) • 4P/Faye (Periodic) • Austin (Non-‐periodic) • Bennet (Non-‐periodic) • Brooks (Non-‐periodic) Asteriod: An asteroid is a small rocky body orbiting the Sun ranging from very small to larger. Some asteroid are: • Ceres • Pallas • Vesta • Hygiea • Juno Meteorite: A meteorite is a piece of rock or metal that has fallen to the Earth’s surface from out of space. Some meteorites are: • Sudbury • Kara • Acraman • Tai • Beaverhead
