Animal Life Cycles Study Guide
What is a life cycle? The stages an animal goes through during its life. Different animals change in different ways as they go through the life cycle.
Life Cycle of a Frog A frog goes through five stages in its life cycle. E: Adult Frog The frog now breathes using lungs. It has no tail. A: Egg
Adult frogs lay their eggs in water.
B: Tadpole
Tadpoles hatch from the eggs. They have tails for swimming and breathe through gills. D: Tadpole with Back and Front Legs The tadpole grows front legs. Its lungs begin to develop and the tail begins to shrink. C: Tadpole with Back Legs
The tadpole grows back legs. It still breathes using gills and has a tail. Animal Life Cycles Study Guide
Life Cycle of a Butterfly
A butterfly goes through four stages in its life cycle. B: Larva A larva hatches from the egg. The larva spends its time eating and growing. As it grows it sheds its skin four or five times. A: Egg Butterflies lay their eggs on plant leaves and stems. C: Pupa
The larva makes a hard covering around its body. Inside the pupa, the larva changes into an adult butterfly. D: Adult Butterfly
The adult butterfly comes out of the pupa with fully formed wings. Animal Life Cycles Study Guide
Many animals resemble (look like) their parents from birth to adulthood. These animals will grow larger, but do not go through distinct stages like butterflies and frogs.
Animals that Resemble their Parents:
 Deer  Bears Animals that DON’T Resemble their Parents:  Butterflies  Frogs  Humans  Ladybugs  Chickens  Beetles Science SOL 2.4 The student will investigate and understand that plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes in their life cycles. Key concepts include: a) Some animals (frogs and butterflies) undergo distinct changes during their lives, while others generally resemble their parents.
