What is taxonomy?
The science of classifying and naming organisms.
Aim:
SWBAT How Aristotle and Linnaeus classified
organisms

Aristotle - Greek Philosopher

Divided animal kingdom into smaller groups based on where
animals lived.

~ Water
~ Fly through the air.

Divided organisms into two large kingdoms:
Plant and Animal

Linnaeus:
•
Created a system to classify organisms based on
similarities in body structures and systems.
~ size
~ shape
~ color
~ methods of obtaining food

In the 1700’s Carolus Linnaeus classified organisms using the criteria of body structures and systems.

He divided organisms into TWO groups called KINGDOMS:
PLANTAE
•
ANIMALIA
He divided each kingdom into smaller groups. Each smaller group was called a GENUS.
Each genus was divided into smaller groups called SPECIES.
