Bidding
Before play begins there is a ‘bidding’ phase which determines who is declarer
and what is the contract. The bidding phase is an auction where the highest
bidder wins the contract.
Rules
•Dealer makes opening bid/pass
•Player on dealers left bids/passes next
•Bidding proceeds clockwise round table
•Each bid must outrank the last one made (its an auction!)
•A player who does not want to bid ‘passes’
•A bid is a number from one to seven followed by a suit or no trumps
•The final bid in the auction is reached when there are three consecutive passes
The contract is 6+number in the final bid
Player who bids suit/no trumps first is declarer even if partner bids final contract

Card Distribution
•As well as HCPs hands are characterised by their distribution
•Distribution is the number of cards per suit
•Distribution is specified by 4 numbers adding up to 13
•The highest number (longest suit) goes first in the sequence
Eg 5-3-3-2,
6-5-1-1,
4-4-4-1,
5-5-3-0
