Explores the impact of • democratic and industrial revolutions • forces that led to world domination by European powers • The Age of Enlightenment challenged traditional, long-held beliefs in Europe, and applied the idea of reason to reform societies economically, politically and socially. Enlightenment thinking influenced the American and French Revolutions and Latin American wars for independence, and brought on the Scientific Revolution and Industrialization. • Imperialism, or Empireism, occurred when more-developed nations took control of less-developed nations to gain wealth and power. The nations who had control had more advanced technology, communication and transportation. The consequences of Imperialism were viewed differently by the controlled and controlling nations. • Economic, imperial and military competition among the proud nations in Europe escalated in 1914 into World War I, the 2nd greatest event of the 20th century. Because of hardship brought on by WWI and internal conflict within Russia, the Communist Revolution began. • The results of WWI and a worldwide economic depression set the stage for the rise of fascism and its aggressive expansion by Germany, Japan and Italy. The Holocaust and the atomic bomb are legacies of the war, as is the United Nations. • The democratic United States and the totalitarian Soviet Union became the world’s two superpowers after WWII, dividing the world into East and West. The two nations had opposite values that led to a competition called the “Cold War.” Actual wars took place in Korea and Vietnam. • The end of colonial rule after WWII led to regional conflict, the rise of nationalist movements, and expanded rights and freedoms in Africa and Asia. The creation of the new nation of Israel led to conflict in the Middle East. • The invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union brought on a more militant Arab/ Muslim response and an increased amount of terrorist acts. • The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 ended the Cold War, unleashing a wave of new European nations in the early 1990s; some with conflict and death, others peaceful. • Emerging economic powers such as China and India, and improvements in technology have created a more interdependent global economy. • Environmental concerns, fueled by population growth and international competition for energy supplies, have led to a movement towards sustaining the world’s natural resources. • Compare and contrast primary and secondary sources and authors’ points of view on similar topics, and analyze whether historical events cause or precede later events. • Integrate quantitative and qualitative data analysis from print or digital text. • Write social studies specific arguments that support claims through logic and evidence.
