BIOL 2401 Lab Exam 1
Compound MICROSCOPE
1. Define what a compound microscope is.
2. Describe how to properly transport, clean, and store a compound microscope.
3. Locate and identify the major parts of the compound microscope (using an
actualcompound microscope)
4. Describe the functions of the major parts of the compound microscope
studied in lab.
5. Explain how to place a prepared slide on the microscope, and the proper
focusing technique to observe an area of the slide using the different lens
magnifications.
6. Calculate the total magnification of an object based on the objective lens
used. Go to the Learning Web to find the following files at BIOL 2401 Labs Folder:
1. Transporting the Compound Microscope
2. Description of the Compound Microscope parts
3. How to calculate Total Magnification of an object
TISSUES
1. Be able to identify the different types of tissues studied in lab.
Epithelial Tissue
Simple Epithelium: -simple cuboidal epithelium (found in thyroid gland, kidney, etc.)
-simple columnar epithelium (found lining intestines, the stomach, etc.)
Stratified Epithelium: -stratified squamous epithelium (keratinized-skin;
and nonkeratinized –lining the oral cavity, vagina, etc.)
-transitional epithelium (found lining the urinary bladder)
Connective Tissue
-Adipose tissue
-Dense regular connective tissue (tendon)
-Hyaline cartilage (trachea)
-Blood (blood smear slide)
Muscle Tissue
-Skeletal muscle
-Smooth muscle
Nervous Tissue
-Identify neurons & neuroglia cells
2. KNOW at least one location in the body for each of the tissues in the listed above (#1)
3. DESCRIBE characteristics for each of the 4 main body tissues.
4. DESCRIBE the functions for each tissue studied in lab.
5. BE ABLE TO DRAW epithelial tissues according to cell layer number (simple or stratified)
and shape of epithelial cells (squamous, cuboidal, columnar)
Go to the Learning Web to find ALL lab files that have been used for your labs. THESE
