I can: Learn about the Muscular system.
Do now: What comes to mind when you hear
Muscular system?
Major Functions of the Muscular system.
Main functions: Movement- Muscles are the only tissue in the body that has
the ability to contract and therefore move the other parts of
the body.
Stability & Posture- Skeletal muscles stabilize human skeleton
and give a proper posture to human beings. Some joints of
human body are weak and they require the support of
muscular system to achieve stability
Heat Production- Because of the high metabolic rate, muscles
produce great amount of heat in the body. Heat produced by
muscles is very important in cold climates.

Diagram of the Muscular system.
Diagram:
In the Muscular System there are 3 types of muscle tissue –
Skeletal Muscle: This muscle creates movement in the body and there
are over 600 of this muscle in the body. When the body needs to
move, the nervous system signals the muscles to come together to
work to move the skeleton.
Cardiac Muscle: This type of muscle is involuntary, it makes up the
walls of the heart and creates the pumping of blood that is signaled
by the brain.
Smooth Muscle: This muscle is also involuntary, it makes up the walls of
hollow organs, respiratory passageways, and blood vessels. With its
wavelike flow which passes things through the bodily system, like food
through your digestive system.
dareltoid: It helps rotate your arm, like reaching forward or even throwing a ball.
ctoralis major: It helps support the arm by keeping it still and able for it to move across the body.
Triceps brachii: It connects the upper arm bone and the shoulder blade to the forearm bone.
Biceps brachii: Acts like the flexor for the elbow joint and the forearm.
nal muscles: It flexes the torso and spin, by pulling the ribcage closer to the
pelvis.
is: Pulls the scalp back so that the eyebrows are lifted and the forehead can
wrinkle.
us: it is the most important muscle of the back and is responsible for moving,
ing, and stabilizing the shoulder blade and extending the head at the neck.
Biceps femoris: it flexes and rotates the leg to extend the thigh.
Muscular interactions with other systems.
skeletal system
It works with the skeletal system to provide locomotion.
-Includes stability, posture and protection.
Along with joints, the bones and muscles work
together.
Digestive system
In the muscular system the smooth muscles help move food through the
intestines.
-Also Muscles surrounding your stomach churn up food which helps
digest.
Cardiovascular system
-Muscles works with the cardiovascular system to provide the muscular
cell with oxygen and food to give energy to the muscles.
Endocrine system The muscular system works with the muscles to produce heat.
-Another way, is the endocrine and muscles releasing glucose. When
your muscles needs energy it sends a signal and insulin releases.
Nervous system muscles work with the nervous system to sense things.
Receptors in the muscles provide the brain with information about the
body position and movements.
The brain controls the contraction of the skeletal muscle.
Respiratory system
For your muscles to function they need oxygen which is received
from the respiratory system.
The muscles push air come into and leave the respiratory
throughout contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm.
Fun Facts
There are more than 600 muscles in the body. Their sizes vary
from tiny, such as the muscles that move the eyeballs in their
sockets, to very large, such as some muscles in the thighs.
!
The 600 muscles and more in the human body controls
movement and help to maintain posture, circulate blood and
move substances throughout the body.
!
The muscular system can be broken down into three types of
muscles: skeletal, smooth and cardiac.
!
Smooth muscles , sometimes also called involuntary muscles
are usually in sheets, or layers, with one layer of muscle
behind the other.
!
The hardest working muscle is in the eye !
Fun Facts
!
It takes 17 muscles to smile and 42 muscles to frown.
!
