VEGAN TRUE™
CoQ10
Antioxidant and Cellular Energy Support
For Heart, Brain, and Muscles
We drag ourselves out of bed and pump ourselves full of
caffeine just to try to wake up. We stumble into work and
drink more coffee, barely able to sustain our energy through
the workday. Afternoons are a fight to stay awake, and then we
crawl home exhausted, falling asleep in front of the T.V. The
body is an energy dynamo giving people the capacity for a
vibrant enjoyment of life. But many of
us are too tired to even notice that
vibrancy passing us by.*

CoQ10 to Energize Your Life
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an important molecule that performs complex
biochemical processes that convert
food into ATP energy, which is the
main source of usable energy for the
activities of your cells and is the fuel
responsible for muscle contraction.
CoQ10 is critically important, especially for organs and body systems that
use large amounts of energy, such as
the muscles, the brain, the liver, and
the circulatory system.*
CoQ10 is like a vitamin, in that it is
naturally occurring and is necessary
for normal functioning of the human
body. Without it, imbalances will
occur in the body and our body systems won’t work optimally. CoQ10 is
also known as ubiquinone—from
“ubiquitous,” which signifies its widespread distribution in each of the trillions of cells in our bodies, and “quinone,” a chemical structure with a
unique ability to be oxidized and
reduced.*
CoQ10 can be derived from dietary
sources. However, the main sources
are not ideal for vegans—meat,
poultry, and fish. With Vegan True™
CoQ10, vegans can maintain this
vitally important nutrient conveniently. Vegan True CoQ10 is completely free of any animal products or
animal-derived ingredients.*
Energy Generation Requires
Nutrients
The body requires many nutrients in
order to perform the complex biochemical processes that convert food
into energy. One of these, CoQ10, a
coenzyme that helps transform nutrients into energy, is essential to this
process. Within each cell, the energygenerating process takes place in
structures called mitochondria—tiny
power plants. Inside these energygenerating stations, fats, sugars, and
amino acids are metabolized to generate the energy needed to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energyrich molecule sometimes called the
“energy currency” of the body. Almost
all biochemical activity in the body
needs ATP to provide the energy to
catalyze the reactions. The body must
produce an astounding half of its own
weight in ATP every day, just for normal functioning.*
CoQ10’s Role in ATP Energy
Several complex metabolic pathways
are required in order for the body to
transform food into ATP and energy
that we can feel and use. First, digestion breaks down large molecules of
protein, carbohydrates, and fat into
smaller components. Those components are then further transformed by
processes like glycolysis and the Krebs
cycle. CoQ10 is a key coenzyme in the
Electron Transport Chain—the final
stage in this extraordinary design. This
pathway generates 90 percent of our
body’s ATP needs from the food we
eat. ATP provides the “energy currency” for the following crucial metabolic functions:
•Synthesis of cellular components
including cholesterol and proteins
(formed primarily by the liver)
• Nerve conduction (in the brain and
peripheral nerves)

• Energy for muscular contraction (of
the heart and skeletal muscles)
•Thousands of enzymatic, biochemical reactions*
CoQ10 and…
The Heart: The heart muscle (myocardium) consumes a tremendous amount
of energy. The human heart beats over
100,000 times and pumps 1,000 gallons of blood each day. CoQ10 is necessary for the generation of the energy
required by the heart. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that
supplementation with this nutrient
may support normal heart function.
Its presence is necessary for cardiac
performance during exercise as exemplified by criteria including blood flow,
oxygen utilization, and exercise tolerance. In addition, CoQ10 may play a
role in maintaining normal blood
pressure.*
Multiple studies have shown that
using cholesterol-lowering drugs called
statins leads to blood and tissue levels
of CoQ10 that are significantly lower
than normal. CoQ10 supplements
may be helpful for people taking
statins.*
Antioxidant Properties: CoQ10
plays an additional vital role in our
metabolism as an antioxidant to protect the lipids in our cell membranes.
Preliminary studies have suggested
that CoQ10 is more efficient than
vitamin E, beta-carotene, or lycopene
in safeguarding LDL cholesterol from
oxidation by peroxides, which can
produce inflammation in arteries that
supply blood to your organs and other
tissues. As a molecule, CoQ10 resembles Vitamin K-2 in its chemical
structure. Its cellular behavior is similar to that of Vitamin E in the way it
absorbs into cells, functioning as an
antioxidant.*
Free Radical Scavenger: Many simple
organic molecules are formed as relatively straightforward carbon and
hydrogen structures. However, some
organic molecules have a more complex structure that is vulnerable to
oxidative damage. If a free radical
locks on, the molecule can be altered
and lose function. Free radicals are
those single electron molecules that
are created during metabolism, but
need to be quenched so that they don’t
find an “open” molecular structure
and lock onto it, bringing about an
alteration. Oxidative stress can lead to
alteration of cells, including damage
to fats in the membranes and to DNA
inside the cells.*
CoQ10’s strong protective power as a
scavenger molecule lies in its ability to
accept an electron from a potentially
harmful reactive oxygen species, making it unable to harm other cells.*
The body’s synthesis of CoQ10
decreases as we age. Cellular CoQ10
levels peak at the age of 20 years in
most organs. Luckily, CoQ10 supplements can be used to help support
normal levels of coenzyme Q10 in the
body. Multiple studies have demonstrated significant effects from supplementation with as little as 100 mg of
CoQ10 per day. Source Naturals®
produces CoQ10 as a stand-alone
product and we include CoQ10 in
significant potencies in many of our
premium formulas.*
