2013/2014 Geometry A Teacher: Nancy Campbell Course Description: The Geometry A course consists of 46 lessons that address basic skills in geometry including reasoning, developing proofs, identifying geometric figures, and constructing figures. Within the course, students explore the relationship between parallel and perpendicular lines. Students also learn about the relationships within a triangle and apply these to the study of quadrilaterals. Additionally, they use the properties of proportions and ratios to study similarity. Syllabus: Unit 1: Tools of Geometry MHSCE Standard: G1.1 Lines and Angles; Basic Euclidean and Coordinate Geometry, G1.1.3, G1.1.4, G1.1.5, G1.1.6 Objectives: Students will be able to : - Make isometric and orthographic drawings - Understand basic terms of geometry - Identify the difference between lines, rays and segments - Find the lengths of segments and the measure of angles - Learn how to use a compass and straight edge to construct congruent lines and angles - Find the distance between points in a coordinate plane - Find the perimeter of polygons and circumference of circles Unit 2: Reasoning and Proof MHSCE Standard: L3.1 Mathematical Reasoning, L3.1.1, L3.1.2, L3.1.3, L3.2 Language and Laws of Logic, L3.2.1, L3.2.2, L3.2.3, L3.2.4, L3.3 Proof, L3.3.1, L3.3.2, L3.3.3 Objectives: Students will be able to: - Recognize conditional statements - Write biconditional statements - Use the laws of Detachment and Syllogism - Identify properties used in geometry - Prove and apply theorems about angles Unit 3: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines MHSCE Standards: L1.1 Number Systems and Number Sense, L1.16, G1.1 Lines and Angles; Basic Euclidean and Coordinate Geometry, G1.1.1, G1.1.2, G1.2 Triangles and Their Properties, G1.2.1, G1.2.2 2013/2014 Geometry A Teacher: Nancy Campbell Objectives: Students will be able to: - Prove and use properties of parallel lines - Relate parallel and perpendicular lines - Classify triangles by their angles and sides - Classify polygons, find the sums of the interior and exterior angles - Graph lines given their equations, Find the equations of graphs - Relate slope and parallel and perpendicular lines - Use a compass and straight edge to construct parallel and perpendicular lines Unit 4: Congruent Triangles MHSCE Standards: G2.3 Congruence and Similarity, G2.3.1, G2.3.2, G2.3.3.
