MARYJANE SHIMSKY From: Hendrickx, Ellen Sent: Friday, October 07, 2011 12:19 PM To: Shimsky, Mary Jane Subject: Sprain Lake and pool MaryJane, One of your constituents Vinny Houston requested that Sprain Lake be opened to kayaks and canoes. He stated that he and others making the request wish to emphasize that they have no intention of interfering with the golfers which is one of the County’s concerns, and that they are not requesting any funds from the state, county, or local governments. They are just requesting access to the water from Jackson Avenue. In a conversation with Chuck Lesnick about same, he suggested a road along southernmost corner of the golf course and ideally, a pedestrian bridge over Jackson Ave would be the most cost effective means of providing access. In addition, he suggested that a public/private partnership with Forest City Ratner on repair, maintenance and use of the pool in Sprain Ridge Park a la Donald Trump and Wollman Rink in Central Park, should be a consideration. I don’t know if there have been fees associated with pool use, but if so, perhaps free or discounted membership for the residents of Ridge Hill might be good incentive for FCR. Ellen P. Please emphasize to the board that we are not in any way going to interfere with the golfers and that we are not requesting any funds from the state, county, or local governments. All we are requesting is access to the water from Jackson Avenue. We submitted it for inclusion on the Parks and Recreation Agenda some time ago. I believe it has been held in abeyance pending additional similar requests so that they can be grouped together. We will let you know when it is scheduled to appear. Respectfully, Ellen Hendrickx Honorable Ms. Shimsky I an very excited about the recreational improvements you are supporting and wanted your assistance on another project that I have been pursuing for the past 5 years. Namely, the opening of the Sprain Lake for Rowing, canoes and kayaks. I was involved in a boating accident on the Harlem River that killed a friend of mine and have tried since then to open this beautiful and very safe lake for boaters to enjoy. The proposal has the support of Paul Feiner and Phil Amicone but not the County, and they own the land around the lake. The County's objections have been interference with the golfers and cost, both of which are no true issues. There is access to the water at the northern end on Jackson Ave that will not bother the golfers and the individuals and schools interested in using the lake will support the effort so no funding from the County is necessary - only permission to have access to the water. Please call me if you can help in any way. Thank you Vinny Houston w 914 237 5592 c 914 439 5615 Ellen P.
