WRITE A PARAGRAPH SUMMARIZING RECONSTRUCTION
RADICAL REPUBLICANS
Use Chapter 16 of your textbook, the responses to your webquest, and the information gathered to answer one
of the following questions. Write a 3 paragraph response paper giving examples and explaining your
thoughts.
1. President Lincoln wanted Reconstruction to heal the nation, but his assassination changed the course of
history. How might Reconstruction have been different if Lincoln was not assassinated?
2. How did Reconstruction help Freedmen? How did it hurt Freedmen?
3. If you were in charge of Reconstruction at the end of the Civil War, what would your plan look like?
Would you punish southerners or make it easy for the south to return to the Union? How would you help
Freedmen gain their rights and be accepted by white southerners?
4. Think about America today. Does racism still exist? Is there still a conflict between the northern states and
southern states? Do you think the policies of Reconstruction helped or hurt America in the long run?
5. Was Reconstruction successful at healing the nation and bringing the south back into the Union? (This
question is not as straight forward as you might think on the surface)
