THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY LOCATION What is the location of a place? Absolute: the position on the earth in which a place can be found Relative: the position of a place in relation to another place PLACE What is the character of a place? The physical characteristics of a place include its landforms and vegetation The political characteristics of a place include countries, states, and cities Other characteristics of a place: Human (customs, politics, foods) Social Economic Cultural Historical HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do people interact with the natural environment of a place? MOVEMENT How do people, goods, and ideas move between places? People (you and me!) Goods (products like your iphone!) Ideas (Facebook!) REGIONS How are places similar to and different from other places? Formal Region: areas in which a certain characteristic is found throughout the area (e.g., mountains) Functional Region: one central place and the surrounding places affected by it (e.g., Denver - central place, surrounding places affected – suburbs like Aurora, Littleton, Thornton) REGIONS A region can be defined as… A group of places drained by a particular river (e.g., Arkansas River) A group of places that have similar landform patterns (mountain towns in Colorado) A group of places ruled by the same government (United States of America!)
