DBQ Essay and Scaffolding Questions
Directions:
1. Base your answer ONLY on what is in the document
2. Answer in NO MORE than three sentences.
One of the main ways they were similar was in their form of government. Both
Athens and Sparta had an Assembly, whose members were elected by the people.
Sparta was ruled by two kings, who ruled until they died or were forced out of office.
Athens was ruled by archons, who were elected annually. Thus, because both parts
of Athens' government had leaders who were elected, Athens is said to have been
the birthplace of democracy.
Document #1- A. Education
Spartan Education
The military school in Sparta was designed not to
teach reading, but the were to teach fitness,
obedience, and courage. Boys were taught
survival skills, such as stealing what they needed
without getting caught, and, under certain
circumstances, to murder helots (slaves). “The
entire mode of (education) these boys and youths
(received) was directed to hardening their bodies.
(pg. 63)
Athenian Education
“ the ability to read and to write some words –
seems to have been common among the citizens
of Athens, in order to be a citizen, and to carry out
the responsibilities of a judge”, the Athenian
citizen needed a basic knowledge of reading and
writing in order to be a member of the
government. Education provided by the state was
not just about learning culture (poetry and
literature) it was also about experiencing and
being politically active.

Document #4 Athenian Government
“It is true that we are called a democracy, for government is in the hands of the many and
not of the few. While everyone is treated equally under the law, and those who want to
achieve excellence in their studies are preferred for to be hired as government leaders, we see
this as a reward for their success.”

Document #5 Spartan Military Government
“The Same goes for the Spartans. One-against-one, they are as good as anyone in
the world. But when they fight in a body, they are the best of all. For though they
are free men they are not entirely free. They accept Law as their master. And
they respect this master more than your subjects respect you. Whatever he
commands, they do. And his command never changes: it forbids them to flee
battle, whatever the number of their foes. He requires them to stand firm-to
conquer or die.”
-From Herodotus’

Document #6 Athenian Women
Ancient philosopher and teacher, Aspasia, was known for her
independence as well as her relationship with Pericles leader of
democratic Athens. Because of her determination to be treated as
an equal she was able to become important to Athenian political
life, Aspasia's story is rare among the women of her time… A
woman could own a property, such as clothes, jewelry, slaves,
however, she wasn’t able to buy anything, or own a land. A
guardian controlled all aspects of her life. Athenian citizenship
enabled her to marry another citizen, to partake in religious
ceremonies, but she still had no voting right or financial independence.
-Aspasia 'First Lady of Athens'
Describe Aspasia’s role in Ancient Athenian society.

Document #7 Spartan Women
To the right is a picture of Helen of Sparta, who
was a Queen of Ancient Sparta. On account of
Sparta’s military organization, the lives that
Spartan women led differed from those of their
sisters in Athens. For the reason that their
husbands, fathers and brothers stayed all the day
out, Spartan women had greater freedom than
Athenian women had. Different from Athens,
Spartan women could inherit land on equal terms
as men. There was no law that forbade them
owning a property. In fact, they owned more than a third of land in Sparta.
Describe the role of a woman in Ancient Spartan society.
