Project title:
Brain-Specific, Modular and Active RNA Therapeutics (B-SMART)
Project Background:
Together with research partners from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Germany and Spain, BSMART focuses on RNA as therapeutic molecule to silence the production of disease-causing proteins. The goal
is to design modular nanoparticles (liposomes and extracell ular vesicles), manufactured via a quality-by-design
protocol, to achieve delivery of therapeutic RNAs to the brain and treat neurodegenerative diseases. Although
brain delivery is not straightforward, this class of diseases face a huge unmet medical need. As a result,
successful development of pre-clinically active formulations can be followed by accelerated introduction of
these therapies for clinical development.
