Educator and Tagging Information Learning Area: Technology Resource Name: Technology Assessment Exemplar Number: TECHN9.104 Item/s: 1 Phase: Senior Phase Grade: 9 Tags: Technology, systems and control, electrical systems, electronic circuits, output, input, push switches, normally open, normally closed, connection, basic circuit, physical activity, worksheet, Formative Assessment Assessment Type: Formative Assessment Form/s: Physical activity, worksheet Copyright for included material: N/A Duration: 60 min Learning Outcome(s) and Assessment Standard(s): Learning Outcome 1: Technological Processes and Skills The learner will be able to apply technological processes and skills ethically and responsibly using appropriate information and communication technology. Assessment Standards We know this when the learner 3 Makes 3.1 Develops plans for making that includes all of the following: Resource lists (e.g. materials lists, tools, people, costs); Formal drawings showing dimensions or quantities (e.g. orthographic, oblique or isometric views, sequence drawings, exploded views); Manufacturing sequence (e.g. flow diagrams, flow charts). 3.2 Chooses and uses appropriate tools and materials to make designed products with precision and control by measuring, marking, cutting or separating, shaping or forming, joining or combining, and finishing a range of materials accurately and efficiently. 3.3 Uses measuring and checking procedures while making to monitor quality and changes, and adapts designs in response to practical difficulties encountered when making the products. 3.4 Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of safe working practices and efficient use of materials and tools. Learning Outcome 2: Technological Knowledge and Understanding The learner will be able to understand and apply relevant technological knowledge ethically and responsibly. Assessment Standards We know this when the learner 3 Systems and Control 3.2 Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of how simple electronic circuits and devices are used to make an output respond to an input signal (e.g. resistors, light-emitting diodes, transistors, push or magnetic switches, thermistors, light-dependent resistors). Learning Space: Assessment Hyperlinks: To be completed later. Rating: Number of questions for exemplar: 1 Easy questions: Medium questions: Question 1 Difficult questions: Assessment Task Push switches There are two different types of push switches. The one switch is normally open and the other is normally closed. A normally open switch does not make a connection with the circuit until it is pushed, while the normally closed switch always makes a connection and only breaks the connection when it is pushed. The two switches make use of differently coloured buttons for identification, but they cannot be identified until they are connected in a circuit. 1.1 1.2 1.2.1 1.2.2 1.3 1.3.1 1.3.2 1.4 1.4.1 1.4.2 Build a basic circuit, making use of the push switches to activate and de-activate the system (lamp). You will need the following components: 2 push switches (different colours), leads, lamp, 2 cells [4 marks] What is the colour of the: [2 marks] normally open switch; and normally closed switch? What happens when you push the: [2 marks] normally open switch; and normally closed switch? Can you give examples of where you would find these switches? [2 marks] normally open switch normally closed switch [10 marks] Suggested Solutions Question number 1. Possible marks 4 marks Answers 2 marks 2 marks 1.2 Answers depend on the colours given by the supplier. 1.3.1 When the normally open switch is connected, the circuit will be 1.1 Connect the circuit as in the following drawing: off. When the switch is pushed, the lamp will light up. 1.3.2 When the normally closed switch is connected, the lamp will light up. When the switch is pushed, the lamp will go off. 2 marks 1.4.1 A doorbell, intercom button 1.4.2 Light in the fridge, car door switches (courtesy light) [10 marks] Appendix of Assessment Tools
