MOUND TREATMENTS – ORTHENE – PYRETHROIDS Dr. Will Hudson Extension Entomologist UGA Extension 4 Dung Beetles Dung beetles, which are in the Scarabaeidae and Geotrupidae insect families, play an important role in pastures. They consume large amounts of animal manure (dung) and use the dung as habitat. Consequently, they help to incorporate animal manure into the soil, increasing the soil organic matter content and improving the fertility, water holding capacity, and physical characteristics of the soil. Their actions have also been credited for reducing pasture fouling (areas that aren’t grazed by the animals because of the presence of manure) and taking away nesting habitat and food resources for flies (particularly the horn fly, Haematobia irritans, and the face fly, Musca autumnalis). These and other beneficial insects can be killed by insecticides applied to control pests. The best way to preserve the ecosystem services from dung beetles and others is to use insecticides sparingly.
