Science Homework: Design-A-Bug!
Name: _______________________
Due Date: _______________
We’ve been studying the biological phenomena of adaptation by looking at insects. Sometimes, just
by looking at the unique parts an insect has, you can guess as to what kind of environment that insect
lives in—what environment that insect is adapted for.
We can also play this game backward—by examining a certain environment we can predict what an
insect that lives there might look like. That insect should have adaptations that would help it be
successful in that environment.
Your assignment is to choose one of the three environments pictured below, and create an insect
that could live and thrive in that environment. Draw a picture of your insect with all of the
adaptations you think it would need to have to be successful. Consider factors that affect an
insect’s “success”:
 Ability to find and eat/drink food and water
 Ability to avoid predators (escape/camouflage)
 Ability to find mates/lay eggs
Also remember the characteristics that all insects have:
 3-segmented body: head, thorax, abdomen
 6 legs
 an exoskeleton
 (most have wings and antennae, too)
Your picture should be accompanied by a list of the adaptations you have chosen to include on
your insect, and a short reason why the insect would need that adaptation. Feel free to give your
insect a name—Latin or otherwise! Be creative!
