Class 2 Vocabulary
1) CDT: Current Dental Terminology Book form published each year with updated dental codes and uses as
well as descriptions.
2) Diagnostic Codes: Those codes that relate to those procedures that aid in diagnosis. 0100-0999
3) Preventative Codes: Those codes that relate to those procedures promote, restore, and maintain oral
health. 1000-1999
4) Restorative Codes: Those codes that relate to procedures that use restorative materials to return the
affected tooth to good health and restore proper function. 2000-2999
5) Endodontic Codes: Those codes that relate to procedures that are concerned with the biology, pathology,
prevention, and treatment of dental pulp and periapical tissues. 3000-3999
6) Periodontal Codes: Those codes that relate to the procedures that address the chronic bacterial infection
of gingival and surrounding periodontal tissue. 4000-4999
7) Prosthodontic Codes: Those codes that relate to procedures that provide substitutions for teeth or
portions of teeth that are lost or missing addressing impaired function, appearance, and comfort issues.

8) Dental Implant: Titanium posts that are permanently attached to the jaw bone to which crowns, bridges,
or dentures are attached.
9) Bridge: Replacement of one or more missing teeth that permanently attaches to natural teeth or roots
that furnish the primary support to the appliance.
10) Oral Surgery Codes: Those codes that relate to procedures that deal with the diagnosis, surgery , and
treatment of disease and deformaties of oral and maxillofacial regions. 7000-7999
11) Orthodontic Codes: Related to procedures that correct and prevent irregularities of malocclusion. 80008999

17) Prophylaxis: The preventative procedure that removes dental plaque, extrinsic stains, and coronal polish.
18) Panoramic Film/Radiograph: X-ray that shows the entire dental cavity in one large film including the jaw,
sinuses, and neck.
19) Bitewing Radiographs: Dental x-ray that shows the coronal portion of teeth and is useful in detecting
interproximal decay.
20) Sealant: Composite material applied to dental pits and fissures to prevent decay.
21) Space Maintainer: Orthodontic appliance used to prevent loss of space or shifting of teeth following
extractions or premature loss of teeth.
22) Amalgum: An alloy or a metal with mercury used to restore decayed teeth.
23) Composite: A resin material used in restorative dentistry
24) Crown: Tooth restoration in which part of the natural tooth structure is removed and replaced with a full
coverage restoration of suitable dental material
25) Provisional Crown: A temporary crown designed for a period of up to 6 months in which a tooth is
evaluated before placing a permanent crown restoration.

27) Core Buildup: Restoration or preparation designed to allow enough structure for the placement of a
crown.

material.

32) Denture: An artificial substitute for missing natural teeth (complete arch) and adjacent tissues.
33) Partial (Denture): An artificial substitute for missing natural teeth (one or multiple) that attaches onto
remaining healthy teeth
34) Pontic: Artificial tooth on a fixed partial (bridge) that replaces a missing tooth or teeth.
35) Retainer: Attachement/crowned teeth used to fixate or stabilize a prosthesis or bridge.
36) Impacted: A tooth in which the normal eruption is prevented by adjacent teeth or bone due to being
wedged or pressed.
37) Extraction: Removal of a tooth
38) Abscess: A collection of infected material (pus) due to a bacterial infection in the center of the tooth.
39) Analgesia: (N2O) A neurologic or pharmacologic state in which painful stimuli are moderated such that
although still perceived, they are no longer painful.
40) Nitrous Oxide: A quick acting, reversible, nondepressant, and nontoxic inhalation analgesic to supplement
other anesthetics and analgesics.
41) Abutment: A natural tooth or implanted tooth substitute, used to support or anchor a fixed or removable
prosthesis.
