River Partnerships -- Student Intern
We are currently recruiting applicants for a 24 week (20 hours/week) internship in our Washington, DC office. The ideal candidate has an interest in river and watershed policy and recreation and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse communities and professional settings Location: Washington, DC, Conservation and Outdoor Recreation, National Park Service, Wild and Scenic Rivers and Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Programs Dates: Mid‐February through mid‐August, part‐time, up to 20 hours per week Overview This is an opportunity to work and learn in the middle of some of the most important river and watershed conservation work taking place in America today. The National Park Service provides assistance to communities to conserve and protect their own natural areas, create new recreational access on and near waterways, and protects the beauty and free flowing nature of some of our most precious waterways through the Wild and Scenic Rivers and Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA), Hydropower Recreation programs. The intern will support senior Planners and River and Watershed Specialists in the execution of nationally significant work. The internship will  Provide an opportunity to work with the National Park Service (NPS)  Allow for collaboration with nonprofits that partner with NPS  Help enrich the body of knowledge for NPS river and watershed efforts  Build connections across many organizations and disciplines Focus of Activities The intern will support the ongoing activities of the Conservation and Outdoor Recreation rivers programs, including policy and partnership development and research to support the NPS rivers community of practice. Major duties include:  Research and development of river and watershed protection tools and inventories.  Complete statewide assessment of water trail programs.  Research NPS planning documents to identify rivers that are eligible or suitable for designation as wild and scenic rivers, summarize results and populate a database  Attend meetings and conference calls and assist with agenda, notes and report out of national river and watershed teams. The typical workday will be spent in independent research or in collaboration with colleagues to accomplish the development of tools for National Park Service staff to better accomplish river and watershed conservation and recreation projects and manage natural and recreational resources. The work place is in the National Park Service National Office at 1201 Eye St, NW, Washington, DC. Education and Qualifications Ideally, you should have the following abilities or interests:  Currently enrolled or recently graduated from college  A passion for outdoor conservation and recreation, especially on rivers and waterways  Strong collaboration skills  A willingness and ability to work independently, but to ask for help when appropriate.  Ability to present information in writing and/or face to face  Ability to work effectively with people from diverse communities and professional settings  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in arranging meetings, conference calls, and dissemination of information and in handling other project logistics  Strong writing skills  Skill in using social media and website communication tools  Finding and assessing information online and through personal interaction  All applicants will be subject to a background check Term of the Internship The internship will run for a period of 24 weeks, with a total of 20 hours per week, on average. Start date is dependent upon hire date, with the assumption the internship will run from late February to August. Benefits  $100 weekly stipend for 24 weeks of service (this is based on 20 hours per week, on average)  $1,493 AmeriCorps education benefit upon successful completion (based on a 12‐week, full‐
