Most of you can recite Newton’s First Law of Motion; The Law of Inertia quite well, but how many
of you really know what it means. Or perhaps you know the meaning, but you struggle to use it in a
sentence. This task is required by your essay assignment. Let’s make sure you know how.
Dictionary definition (Physics)
inertia  noun
inertial  adjective
a. the property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its
velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force.
b. the tendency of a body to preserve its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force
c. a similar property of other physical measurement that resists change
Have you ever been riding in a car when the driver stopped suddenly? What
happen to your body? Did it feel as though your body continued to move forward?
Did you feel the safety belt push back against your chest? In the car, your body
was in motion, traveling at the same speed as the car and so you and the car had
the same relative inertia. The car’s inertia may have resisted change, but was
ultimately stopped by the unbalanced force of the breaks. Your body’s inertia
however, remained unchanged for only a moment. The inertial force of motion
continued moving you forward until, your body was stopped by the safety belt.
