WHAT IS POACHING?
Poaching is the illegal killing of wildlife. Modern wildlife management permits
hunting and fishing of certain species under carefully controlled regulations which
can include seasons, time of day, sporting equipment restrictions and other items.
These restrictions are in place to to ensure that the harvest is sustainable and the
species remains healthy. Poaching does not follow the conditions of regulated
hunting and is detrimental to the species.
Poaching may include any of the following:
• The poacher does not have a license or permit.
• The animal may not be in season for hunting. Certain times of year, especially
during breeding seasons, wildlife are protected from hunting by law.
• The animal is hunted outside of legal hours. It is illegal to hunt certain animals at night.
• An illegal weapon was used to kill the animal.
• The animal was killed on land that did not allow hunting.
•Illegal hunting practices were used, for example, spotlighting deer or hunting from a moving vehicle.
•Hunting the animal is forbidden by law.
• The poacher is selling the animal or Tigers are often poached for their bones, fur and other body parts which are used in
parts for profit.
