Ionic Compounds
When atoms transfer electrons to other
atoms when they form a compound.

1 Electron is transferred
Therefore:
Sodium becomes positive (+1)
Chlorine becomes negative (-1)
Naming of Ionic Compounds
1) Name of the metallic element comes first
Sodium + Chlorine (which is metallic?)
2) Non-metallic element comes second.
Change its ending to "ide"
Chlorine

3) Put the names together.
Sodium chloride
No capital!!!

Molecular Compounds
1) When atoms share electrons when they
form a compound.
2) Atoms stay linked regardless of changes
of state (freezing, boiling, melting).
3) Though bonding is strong the
attraction is weak between molecules.
(Therefore low melting and boiling points)
Ionic stronger bonding than Molecular
Therefore:
Ionic are usually solids*
Molecular are usually liquids or gases*

**Remember that if there is only one of the first element there will not be a "mono" in front**
5) Put the number associated with each prefix by the bottom right hand
corner of each element
