Maxillofacial Unit Care Of Your Fixed Orthodontic Appliance – (Brace) Your new brace has been fixed to your teeth in such a way that you cannot remove it yourself. During the first few days you may feel some discomfort. This may be due to your teeth starting to move and the discomfort may be alleviated by taking your normal pain killers. You may also find that the brace may rub the insides of your lips and cheek. You will be provided with some comfort wax from your orthodontist. This should be placed over the part of the brace that is rubbing. To begin with you should eat soft foods until you get used to your brace. This should also prevent any early breakages. Things to avoid Sticky toffees, chewing gum and hard sweets or mints Sticky snacks between meals Fizzy drinks, which are high in sugar and are very acidic Things to be careful of Hard toasts, hard chips, crusty bread, pizza crust – we suggest you do not eat these while you are wearing your brace Be careful of apples and hard raw vegetables – these should be cut up Brush your teeth carefully at least twice a day. You should spend a minimum of three minutes cleaning your teeth. An inter-dental brush is also very useful. Please ask your orthodontist how to use one of these. A fluoride mouthwash such as Fluorigard® should be used just before bed in order to protect your teeth. Fluorigard can be bought from shops such as Boots and Sainsburys. If you have been provided with elastics to wear with your brace, these must be worn at all times except when eating and cleaning teeth. If your elastics are running out, contact the department on the number below for a fresh supply. These will be posted to you free of charge.
