EARTH – GEOSPHERE (AK)
Label and describe each layer of the geosphere.
Layer Name
Crust
Location
Description
The ground we
stand on is part
of the core. It is
the outer-most
layer of the
geosphere.
Made up of mostly rock, soil
formation takes place here,
temperature and pressure
increase as you go closer to
the center of the Earth
Just below the
crust, it is a very
thick layer of the
Earth.
Made up of very hot solid rock,
convection currents occur here
(heat is transferred from the
center of the Earth to the
surface through the mantle)

Mantle
Mantle = Middle
AM
The core is at
the very center
of the Earth.
Core
The outer core is made up of
mostly metal. This metal is so
hot that it is liquefied. In the
inner core, the pressure is so
great that the metal remains
solid. The center of the Earth
is the most dense point of the
Earth.
Explain each method of heat transfer.
EX
Radiation: When heat is transferred through the use of waves of energy___________________
Convection: When heat is transferred through the use of a gas or liquid____________________
Conduction: When heat is directly transferred from one object to another__________________
Which form of heat transfer is found in the mantle? Explain.
Convection. As heated pieces of the mantle rise, that heat is transferred toward the surface.
When the heated mantle cools, it sinks back down toward the core forming a cycle.__________
