A DOLL’S HOUSE by Henrik Ibsen 2 HOUR SCHOOLS WORKSHOP – VENUE BASED Suitable for: KS5 students studying towards: • GCE AS/A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, Performing Arts or English Literature • BTEC Performing Arts KS4 students studying towards GCSE Drama or Performing Arts This 2 hour workshop has been developed in association with UK Touring Theatre’s production of A Doll’s House, which is touring to theatres across the UK in Autumn 2014. It is ideal for students to attend prior to watching a performance of the play. The workshop is led by two professional actors from the UK Touring Theatre cast. All our actors have several years experience of running workshops for schools, and will also be able to answer questions from students about the acting industry and life as a professional actor. UK Touring Theatre will also provide a full education pack to accompany the workshop; containing further activities and practical exercises that the teacher can use for follow‐up practical drama lessons. Available to book during the tour period only. Maximum 25 students per workshop. This workshop will take place at the venue on the performance day during the afternoon. (Morning workshops are also available at venues where there are more than one performance date). AIMS • • • To engage the students with theatrical concepts through a practical exploration of the themes and characters of “A Doll’s House”, the style of realism and the text of the play To develop students’ practical understanding and appreciation of Ibsen’s ideas and themes To develop a variety of practical rehearsal and performance skills, enabling students to grow creatively and imaginatively in devised and scripted work OBJECTIVES By the end of the workshop students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the themes and characters of “A Doll’s House”, one of the most important plays in 19th century drama • Show understanding of an extract from “A Doll’s House” and of the dynamics of the play through an interpretation in performance • Create and develop a character and communicate meaning through a variety of vocal and physical techniques, facial expression, listening and response • Demonstrate a more advanced level of performance skill • Evaluate the development of their acting skills, their performance and those of others WORKSHOP OUTLINE • Practical warm‐up (physical and vocal) • Introduction to the themes and characters of “A Doll’s House” through theatre games and improvisation - The Role of Women in the 19th Century - Money and Debt - Parents and Children - Marriage and Family - Personal freedom • Approaching a role from “A Doll’s House” for performance - Character objectives - Physicality - Vocal quality • Work on scenes from “A Doll’s House” in pairs/groups of three OR • Improvised scenes from the world of the play in pairs/groups of three • Performance to the group/sharing of work • Evaluate your performance and those of others • Q & A with the actors ABOUT US UK Touring Theatre is a British touring theatre company, which is committed to developing exciting new translations of classic European plays; touring to theatres across the UK, Europe and beyond.
