Joint Commission International (JCI) was formerly known as Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organization (JACHO) and
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JACH) Let us have a
look at the history of JCI.
In 1994 the JACHO implemented several important changes:
 A revised survey process applying performance focused standards
organised around patient care functions
 Data collection for initial indicator sets for the indicator measurement
system


Release of organisation specific performance reports
Accreditation and certification services Offered by JCI
The Joint Commission provides evaluation and accreditation services for the
following types of organizations:

General, psychiatric, children’s and rehabilitation hospitals

Critical access hospitals
 Medical equipment services, hospice services and other home care
organizations

Nursing homes and other long term care facilities

Behavioral healthcare organizations, addiction services
 Rehabilitation centers, group practices, office-based surgeries and
other ambulatory care providers


In 2007 JCI established a few patient safety goals to improve the
quality of care they are:

National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH)
The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers
(NABH) is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, set up to establish
and operate accreditation programmes for healthcare organizations. The board
is structured to cater to much desired needs of the consumers and to set
benchmarks for the progress of the health industry.
NABH standards for hospitals have been drafted by Technical committees of
NABH and contain a complete set of standards for evaluation of hospitals for
grant of accreditation. The standards provide framework for quality assurance
and quality improvement for hospitals. The standards focus on patient safety
and quality of care. The standards call for continuous monitoring of sentinel
events and comprehensive corrective action plan leading to building of quality
culture at all levels and across all the functions. The standards are equally
applicable to hospitals and nursing homes in the government as well as in the
private sector.

Ten steps to NABH accreditation:
1.
Obtain copy of NABH standards
2.
Carry out self assessment on status of compliance with the NABH
standards.
3.
Identify gap areas and prepare action plan to bridge the gaps.
4.
Ensure that NABH standards are implemented and integrated with
hospital functioning.
5.
Obtain copy and submit application form for assessment.
6.
Pay the accreditation fee.
7.
Receive from NABH the assessment programme including dates
and names of assessors.
8.
Facilitate the assessment.
9.
Receive recommendation on accreditation.
10. Maintain quality improvement programme based on continuous
monitoring of patient care services.
