CELL EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES 50 points
Objective: Familiarize and learn different types of cells, cell parts, and what they do.
Directions: Read the information below to do the activities. All of the websites can also be found on my website
(mracos.com) under “Internet Resources”. If you have any trouble with the website, move on to next activity. Write your
answers on this sheet. Use a loose paper if you need more space. Work independently and without teacher assistance but
If you get stuck, you may ask your partner for help but do not simply copy from them. Off task behavior may result in a poor
grade. Choices come with consequences.
Part A - Bacterial Cell
Directions: Go to: http://www.cellsalive.com tap on “bacteria”, then “start animation” Label the numbered parts on each line.
Part B - Animal Cell
Directions: Go to: http://www.cellsalive.com, tap on “Plant/Animal”, then “start animation” Tap on the various parts of the cells to go to a screen that tells you
about the parts. Answers to the following questions are there.
1. What do the mitochondria do? 2. How big are mitochondria? 3. What does the Golgi apparatus do? 4. What is the difference between smooth and rough ER? 5. Where is the nucleolus found? 6. What does the nucleolus do? 7. What does the cytoskeleton do? 8. Cytosol goes by what other name? 9. What is the function of the cytosol? 10. What is the function of the lysosome? Sketch each of the following: Mitochondria Ribosome Nucleus Cell Membrane Part C - Plant Cell
Directions: Go to: http://www.cellsalive.com, tap on “Plant/Animal”, then “start animation” Tap on the various parts of the cells to go to a screen that tells you about the parts. Answers to the following
questions are there.
1. What other type of cell has a cell wall? 2. What makes a plant cell green? 3. In plant cells, what does the vacuole do? Sketch each of the following: Chloroplast Vacuole Part D - Overview
Directions: For the chart below, place a check in the box if a cell has that component. Part E – Mixed Up Cells
Directions: 1. Go to: www.beaconlearningcenter.com/WebLessons/MixedUpCells/default.htm 2. Go thorough the activity by reading the directions. 3. In the space below, write 3 -5 things you learned from doing this activity. 1.

Part F– Cell Structure
Directions: 1. Go to http://www.wiley.com/legacy/college/boyer/0470003790/animations/cell_structure/cell_structure.htm 2. Click on INTRO and then continue on by clicking the arrows. 3. Fill in the information in the Venn diagram below (shared characteristics go in the overlapping circles). Part G– Cell Quiz
PROKARYOTIC CELL EUKARYOTIC CELL Directions: 1. Go to http://www.biology4kids.com/extras/quiz_cellorgan/index.html 2. Take the quiz and put your score here: __________ Part H – What I’ve Learned
(DO THIS LAST) On the lines below, write what you’ve learned by doing the activities in this packet. Be as specific as possible
and use COMPLETE SENTENCES. Yes, spelling counts (of course).
Let me tell you about some of the important things I’ve learned about cells. First, I’ll start with . . .
Next, I’ll tell you about . . .
Something else I learned was . . .
Lastly, I now really know about and understand . . .
