viu.ca/emergency Emergency Procedures Fire Hazardous Materials ▪▪If you see a fire or smell smoke, pull the fire alarm. ▪▪Move to a safe area, call 911 and 250-740-6600. ▪▪If trained, use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small. ▪▪Evacuate by proceeding to the nearest exit with stairs, closing windows and doors if possible. ▪▪Proceed to Evacuation Points and look for an Emergency Warden or Emergency responder for directions. ▪▪DO NOT re-enter the building until directed by emergency personnel. ▪▪If you or someone you are with cannot evacuate, proceed to a stairwell and wait for help. ▪▪If you are not properly trained to manage the release or spill clean-up, call Campus Security at 250-740-6600. ▪▪If there is a known risk of fire, or explosion, or noxious fumes, call 911. ▪▪DO NOT operate electrical devices, phones light switches or equipment in the spill area. ▪▪Alert people in the immediate area to evacuate if materials are toxic. ▪▪Proceed to Evacuation Points. Armed Intruder Quickly determine the best way to protect yourself and, when it is safe to do so, call 911 and campus security at 250-740-6600. EVACUATE ▪▪Consider a safe evacuation of the area if you know the location of the threat. When evacuating, keep your hands visible and follow police instructions. SHELTER IN PLACE ▪▪Remain in classroom or office and lock and barricade all doors and windows by any means available. ▪▪Turn off lights and stay behind solid objects which are away from doors and windows. ▪▪Minimize noise, turn off cell phones (ringers, alarms and vibrations) and audio equipment. TAKE ACTION If you are caught in an exposed area and you cannot get into a classroom or office you must decide on a course of action. ▪▪Hide - remain calm and stay hidden until you can make safe contact with police. ▪▪Running – if you think you can safely make it out of an area, run in a zigzag pattern. ▪▪Playing dead – if others around you are wounded, you may choose to lay still. ▪▪Fight – confrontation is a last resort. Attempt to incapacitate the assailant by any means available. First Aid ▪▪Call 250-740-6600, be prepared to provide your name, location on campus including building and room number and request first aid. ▪▪For medical emergencies, call 911 to request an ambulance and then call 250 -740-6600 to notify VIU that an emergency vehicle is en route. Campus Security 250-740-6600 911 Bomb Threat/ Suspicious Object If you receive a bomb threat by telephone, follow these steps: ▪▪Stay calm; ▪▪Keep the caller on the line; ▪▪Do not upset the caller; and Ask a lot of questions: ▪▪Where is the bomb? ▪▪When is it set to go off? ▪▪What kind is it? ▪▪What does it look like? ▪▪Permit the caller to say as much as possible without interruption. ▪▪Record the caller’s phone number if possible. Take notes on everything said and on your observations about background noise, voice characteristics, language, etc. Ensure you are in a safe location and call 250-740-6600 and advise that a bomb threat has been received and request police involvement. SUSPICOUS OBJECT FIRE, POLICE, AMBULANCE ▪▪DO NOT touch or disturb the object. ▪▪Move to a safe location and call 911 and 250-740-6600. Power Outage Earthquake ▪▪Report the outage by calling Security at 250-740-6600. ▪▪Unplug voltage sensitive equipment. ▪▪Secure any lab equipment and shut off gasses. ▪▪Secure any mechanical equipment/processes and shut off gasses. ▪▪Wait for further instructions from your Supervisor. ▪▪Drop, Cover and Hold! Drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk and hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk nearby, drop to the ground in an inside corner of a building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. ▪▪When shaking stops, move carefully, don’t run as there could be aftershocks. ▪▪Safely evacuate the building and move to the designated Evacuation Point. ▪▪DO NOT use elevators. ▪▪Before you leave the building, consider your outside surroundings and any hazards that may be present such as downed power lines, falling objects and debris. Gas Leak ▪▪If you smell gas, hear gas escaping and suspect a gas leak, DO NOT pull the fire alarm. ▪▪Stop what you are doing, DO NOT use your cell phone or landline, or operate electrical switches. ▪▪Verbally announce the need to evacuate the building. ▪▪Go outside, leaving the door and any windows open, then proceed to Evacuation Points.. ▪▪Call Campus Security at 250-740-6600 and report a gas leak. ▪▪DO NOT re-enter the building until directed by emergency personnel.
