The Night Sky Star: A star is a massive luminous sphere of plasma, held together by its own gravity. Hot enough to sustain nuclear fusions and thus produce radiant energy. Other Stars: Betelgeuse-A star 600 times our sun. A dying star likely to go super nova. The Sun- The star at the center of our Solar System. Sustaining life on earth Alpha Centauri-Three stars locked in their gravitational pull. Planet: A celestial being that orbits the sun, It is a sphere shape. It Has it has gravity and does not orbit around another planet Other Stars: Uranus- the 3rd largest planet in our solar system, a gas giant. Earth- The homeworld of the human race. 3rd planet from the sun. Mercury- The closest planet to the sun. It has scorching temperatures. Satellite: A small object (moon) that orbits around a planet Other Satellites: Moon- The satellite that orbits around the earth Galilean moons- The four biggest moons of Jupiter. Discovered by galileo Titan- The largest satellite of Saturn. It is bigger than mercury. Constellation: A group of stars seen in the sky as a figure or design. Other Constellations: Southern cross: constellation seen in the southern hemisphere points south Andromeda- A constellation discovered by the astronomer Ptolemy Carina- A constellation that looks like the keel of a ship Galaxy: A large numerous collections of stars, gas giants and planets that make up a visual universe. They are held together by each planets and stars gravity. Other Galaxies: Sunflower galaxy- A galaxy in a spiral form discovered in 1779 Whirlpool galaxy- A whirlpool like galaxy. thought to be about 14 million lght years away from the milky way. Cigar Galaxy- A galaxy shaped like a cigar also known as Messier 82. t is said to be 100 times brighter than the milky way. Comet: A celestial object that orbits the Sun along an elongated path. A comet that is not near the Sun consists only of a nucleus—a solid core of frozen water, frozen gases, and dust. Other comets: Halleys comet- A comet best known for it being the most well known short period comet seen on earth. appearing every 74-75 years. Comet Encke- A comet discovered by Encke. Known to orbit the sun every 3-4 years. 15p/Finlay- A periodic comet in the solar system discovered by William Henry Finlay Bibliography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star http://science.yourdictionary.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/706436main_20121114-304-193Blend_M6-orig _full.jpg http://science.yourdictionary.com/
