Region – an area with at least one feature that makes it different from other areas
5 Regions: Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Middle West, West
Regions differ, but they still depend on one another. Example: coastal, rural,
desert, mining, etc
Interdependence – people and places depending on one another from resources,
products, and services
4 types of regions:
*political region
*physical region
*economic region
*cultural region
Political region
*A place where people share a government
*Every state, city, and town is a political region
*Political regions help people live and govern in an organized way
Boundary – borders
Physical region
*based on natural features (landforms, oceans, rivers, climate, and kind of wild
life) natural vegetation
*Natural vegetation – the plant life that grows in an area
*no exact borders in physical region
Economic Region
*based on the way people in an area use resources to meet their needs
*Examples: oil producing region, farming region, ranching region

Cultural Region
*an area in which people share a certain way of life
*Examples: religion, language, ethnic groups
Ethnic group – made up of people from the same country or people with a shared
way of life
Dividing places into political, physical, economic, and cultural regions makes it
easier to understand the world
Modify – change
People modify their environment to meet their needs by:
*clearing forests
*plowing land to farm
*dam up rivers
*make new lakes
*dig mines
*dig wells
Technology – the way people use knowledge and tools to make or do something
Communications – the way people send and receive information
All forms of communication connect regions by allowing people to see and hear
what is happening in different regions
