At Work 1. RM - Language Work - Test Yourself - Test 4, 5 and 6 are about: - Subjects - Adjectives - Adverbs Adjectives Adjectives are used to describe persons or things (nouns): She is a nice person. It was a wonderful football match. When we have verbs like be, become, look, feel, grow, seem, smell, taste, sound they are used together with adjectives: This smells awful. He looked angry. In these sentences awful and angry say something about the subjects this and he, not the verbs. Adverbs Adverbs are used to say something about: • • • • an activity (the verb): They playedbadly today. an adjective: He is an extremely nice person. another adverb: Usually they behave well, but today they behaved extremely badly. a whole sentence: Luckily, they arrived in time. Notice how adverbs are written: • Many adverbs are formed by adding ly to an adjective: awful - awfully, polite - politely, gentle -gently (le becomes ly) • Words ending in ll, get the ending y: full - fully • Most adjectives ending in y, change the y into i before ly: happy - happily • Most adjectives ending in ic, get the ending ally: drastic - drastically Some special adjectives/adverbs • The adjective good has the adverb well: He is a good musician. He plays well. • The adjective hard has two adverb forms: It was hard work. They worked hard. They hardly worked (knapt). • The adjective late has two adverb forms: They came by a late bus. They came home late. I havent seen him lately (i det siste). • The adjective direct has two adverb forms: There is a direct train. We came direct from London. We have to do these exercises directly (straks, med en gang / straks, med ein gong). © Aschehoug Page 1 of 1
