Edwin Hubble 18891953 The father of observational cosmology and pioneer of the distant stars Preastronomer • Edwin Powell Hubble was born in Missouri on November 29 th 1889 • He attended Oxford University where he studied LAW • 1913 opened up small law practice in Louisville Kentucky Getting into Astronomy • 1917 Hubble received a doctorate in astronomy from the University of Chicago • Determined the existence of many galaxies, including the Milky Way – Previously believed to be our universe • Hubble devised a classification system for the galaxies he observed, sorting them by content, distance, shape, and brightness Besides the Milky Way… • Hubble discovered a Cepheid (a variable star) in the Andromeda Nebulae • He was able to measure the distance to the Great Nebula and that of a number of other spiral nebulae using the powerful 100inch telescope at Mount Wilson. Hubble’s Law 1929 • “We are assuming that the universe expands uniformly, at a constant rate, and that the recessional velocity (V) is linearly proportional to the distance (r). Hubble's constant (H0), is determined by observational data, and remains unchanged by the values of (V) and (r).” • (helped prove the universe was expanding) Hubble’s Law Continued • In other words: – he showed that galaxies are moving away from us with a speed proportional to their distance – Aka: the Universe is expanding Awards • 1946Medal of Merit – for exceptional conduct in providing outstanding services to citizens • 1948 Honorary Fellow of Queen’s College, Oxford – for his notable contributions to Astronomy Telescopes • helped design a 200inch Hale telescope – built at Mount Palomar – became the first to use it. • Hubble Space Telescope is continuing the work begun by Hubble himself to map the Universe, and producing the most remarkable images of distant galaxies ever seen • Hubble Space Telescope was launched on 24th April, 1990 (named after Edwin Hubble) The End Works Cited • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Hubble# Discoveries • http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/edwinhubble.ht ml • http://www.edwinhubble.com/hubble_bio_ 001.htm
