Don’t Rock the Boat
Written by Ruth Corrin
Illustrations by Astrid Matijasevic
Whole class focus
Introducing the Text
• Children read the title. They say what happens to a boat if we rock
it, and tell you what they think might happen in a story with a title like
this.
Reading the Text
Guided reading
Teaching points
• Children work in pairs to talk through the illustrations, and read the
story together.
• Reread the story with the children. They take turns telling what
happens on each page.
• Children read page 7 and tell you how the sentence pattern is different
from the previous pages of the story. They suggest why the author
decided to make this pattern change.
• Children count the number of bears on each page. They work with
you to write number sentences.
2 +2 = 4
4+4=8
8 + 8 = 16
Children tell you what they notice about the number of bears that got on
each time.
Returning to the Text
Text work
Children retell the story in sequence, saying how many bears there were
at the beginning of the story. They draw the story sequence as a comic
strip and write the correct number on each picture. They take their work
home to share.
The Story
Some bears invite
their friends to go
boating. But the boat
turns out to be a bit
too small.
