AP Government ELO’s
Students will be expected to know the following:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the policymaking System within the United States Political System.
2. Demonstrate understanding of how Public Policy, Contemporary Theory and Diverse Political Interest help develop our system.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the Origins of the Constitution and how the Road to Revolution, the Declaration of
Independence, and the Conservative Revolution help establish our system.
4. Identify required primary and secondary source information found through research with an appropriate citation format.
5. Distinguish between types of political organizations and trace changes in those political organizations.
6. Identify significant individuals associated with government and understand how they impacted political events, issues and
society.
7. Identify and interpret issues themes associated with the Federalist Papers.
8. Demonstrate a willingness to be open-minded when it comes to the views of various authors who have interpreted political
ideologies thought-out the past 200 years.
9. Understand our Constitutional Foundation and what events led to specific political failures.
10. Be able to understand the failures of the Articles of Confederation, Shays’ Rebellion and the Economic Turmoil of the late
1700’s.
11. Explain the concept of Federalism and how political powers are interpreted.
12. Demonstrate the ability to understand how the Federal Court system changed in the early 1800’s with key decisions such as
McCulloch v. Maryland and Gibbons v. Ogden.
13. Identify how technological advances, economic systems were changed by the growth of our federal government.
14. Distinguish between the rights of individuals and the powers of the Federal, State, and local government with regards to our
Amendments.
15. Identify the Bill of Rights and why were they incorporated into the Constitution, at the Federal level.
16. Understand the importance of Public Opinion and how it plays a major influence in the political arena.
17. Analyze and/or create graphs, charts, and databases that represent judicial cases and how they have changed the direction of the
Federal Government.
18. Understand the importance of the Mass Media and what roles it plays in today’s political environment.
19. Explain the political election system and how the Republican Party and Democratic Party differ in the Primaries.
20. Determine the effect of the Political Action Committees (PAC) on our political system in the United States.
21. Use writing, oral and visual forms of communication to present views on specific topics within government class.
22. Be able to work as an individual or in group settings to develop problem solving scenarios.
