The Geography of Ohio
Standards:
* Geography Standard-location of plains, Appalachian Plateau, rivers, Lake
Erie.
* Geography Standard-describe and compare landforms, climates,
population, vegatation and economic characteristics of places and regions in Ohio.
* Geography Standard-identify how environmental processes (glaciation,
weathering) and characteristics (landforms, water, climate, vegetation) influence
human settlement and activity in Ohio.
* Geography Standard-use elevation maps to answer questions about
patterns of settlement, economic activity and movement.

Interior Plains
Appalachian Plateau
We are going to label
the Interior Plains (Lake
and Till) and Appalachian
Plateau.

Interior Plains
Appalachian Plateau
smooth (flat) land with
gently rolling hills
has plateaus (flat land area
that rises sharply)
2 large plains called:
Lake Plains
Till Plains (till-mix of
soil and rocks; good for
growing crops.)
2 parts:
Northern Part-low
rounded hills
Southern Part-steeper
and rockier hills
western half of Ohio
better for farming because
it is flat and easier to plow.
Weather vs. Climate
describes air at
a certain time and
place (hot,cold,rainy)
eastern Ohio
not good for farming because
hilly (higher land than Plain
region)
Sep 2410:39 AM
pattern of weather that
occurs in a place year
after year (each season is
differentwarm/wet=summer)
Precipitation-snow, rain, sleet, hail

Ohio's Climate
Ohio climate changes with the four seasons.
Glacier
glacier-a thick moving sheet of ice
-covered much of Ohio at one time
spring and summer
warm and wet
fall and winter
cold and wet
Ohio has about 30 to 40 inches of precipitation each year.

Effects of the glacier
1. flattened our land
2. created a richer soil called till that is great for
farming
3. made our 5 Great Lakes (made Lake Erie)
4. rounded off high hills
5. filled in valleys
6. pushed rocks and soil from one place to
another (left some stuff alone)
7. cut into solid rock (grooves)
Sep 2412:15 PM
Glaciers did not spread into southeastern
Ohio. We know this because...
the hills are rockier and steeper than in
the rest of the state.
it would be flatter in southeastern Ohio
if the glacier moved there.
Sep 2412:25 PM
See how the glacier moves and what it does to our
land.
Sep 2412:21 PM
Port-a place where ships load and unload
goods
-important Lake Erie ports are Sandusky,
Cleveland, Toledo
Sep 2412:32 PM

tributary-any river that flows into
another,larger river
-the Ohio River is a tributary of
an even larger river the Mississippi
River
