Domain & Range Word Problem Steps
For each word problem given below, complete the following tasks:
1. If no equation is given to model the situation, write an appropriate equation to model the problem.
2. State the domain and range for the function – be specific with any limitations that exist due to the nature of the data.
Remember that DOMAIN describes the values that x (or the independent variable) can be in the problem and RANGE describes the values that y (or the dependent variable) can be in the problem

The surface area of a cube is the total outside area of the cube. It can be found by using the formula: A = 6s2. Ms. Weeks asks you to construct a cube that has a side length of at least 3 inches.

2. Joe has an afterschool job at the local sporting goods store. He makes $6.50 an hour. He never works more than 20 hours in a week. The equation s(h) = 6.5h can be used to model this situation, where h represents the number of hours Joe works in a week.

A local youth group is planning a trip to a local amusement park. They are taking their church bus which holds 32 people. It will cost $25 for parking and tickets to enter the park are $22.50 per person. The equation that models this situation is: c(n) = 22.5n + 25, where c represents the cost for the group to go the park and n represents the number of people who go on this excursion.

4. Jovante decides to start a business by printing designs on tshirts and selling them for $25 each. The printing machine costs $1000, and the materials for each tshirt cost $7.50. Jovante is interested in calculating the profit of her business. (Profit is defined as revenue minus expenses.) To get started, Jovante orders 500 tshirts.
