NOVEMBER 2010 APPLES ARE THE NEW FISH! ʻTIS THE SEASON OF THE APPLE By Dr. Cathy Remember the old adage, “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away?” HMMMM! Well it looks like continuing research on nutrients in our foods supports the evidential truth in that old adage. Apples provide so many benefits it is important they be in our diet along with the other varied fruits and vegetables loaded with nutrients, vitamins, fiber, and natural sugars. When will we realize that Natureʼs bounty is designed to be our primary source of these life giving ingredients? Donʼt get me wrong; I am so happy to see articles on the health benefits of natural foods in print and on the news. What gets me is why itʼs NEWS! Generations upon generations ate the natural foods in their environment. We are truly the Hunters and Gathererʼs of the worldʼs human population. We might also remember that the desire for spices and exotic foods which man didnʼt find in his environment spurned the search for new life and land on other continents and thus we found that the world was actually round and not flat as conventional thinking of earlier times commanded. It is just this idea that prompts me to write. We are so capable as a Nation of overcoming poor health and health risk factors if we would learn to understand ourselves. Nutrition is what our bodies need to support normal cell growth. Turnover keeps our cells, tissues, muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, organs and organ systems in a constant state of flux, building up and breaking down to maintain a balanced state or what is known as “homeo-stasis”. This is the key to health and healing and nutrition plays a hearty role in the laws of the body and its harmonious state, although nutrition alone cannot do what the natural laws worked in harmony can and will. Let us take the common Apple and look at its benefits. Hopefully you are eating this jewel of the fruits as a part of your nutrition but if you arenʼt, here are some great reasons why you could: Apples are rich in Vitamin C and loaded with fiber, particularly pectin, a soluble fiber that not only promotes digestive health but lowers blood-cholesterol levels. Research is finding the Apple and its juice have functional properties well beyond their nutritional value, and many of the goodies are in the juice as well as the flesh. Now there is evidence that apples can keep you mentally sharp as you age. They protect neurons from the cognitive decline that typically accompanies aging; improving nerve-cell communication and can prevent, halt, and even reverse some signs of Alzheimerʼs disease. Itʼs not clear which apple components do what, but several antioxidants and flavonoids are likely active in multiple ways. Drinking two cups of pure (not pasteurized for shelf life) apple juice or eating one large apple a day may be the easiest way to save your brain. Apple Line Up of Benefits Free Radical Slayer – By reducing the vulnerability of nerve cells to inflammation and oxidative stress from free oxygen radicals, this makes them an effective Anti-oxidant. Bad-Gene Killer – Apple components suppress the expression of notoriously harmful genes active during the aging process, particularly the presenilin-1 gene known to promote early development of Alzheimerʼs! One primary Neurotransmitter found to be improved is Acetylcholine. This primary neurotransmitter influences signals important to movement, sensory perception, and attention. Mice slurping water spiked with apple juice (8 ounces/day) were found to have no decline in Acetylcholine even though they were eating a vitamin-poor diet. Vitamin Booster – Apples and apple juice have been shown to reduce the neurotoxin betaamyloid found in Alzheimerʼs diseases and reduces toxicity of the harmful substance. Researchers found that consumption of apple juice totally reversed the effect of a vitamin-poor diet that is known to foster accumulation of the beta-amyloid toxin in brain tissue. The Newest Therapy – Among 21 people with moderate to severe Alzheimerʼs disease who each consumed 8 ounces of Apple juice a day for a month, the behavioral and psychotic symptoms of the disease fell by 27%. Patients experienced reductions in anxiety levels, agitation, and delusional symptoms. The researchers see apple juice as useful adjunct therapy for the mood changes linked to the brain disorder. Well having reported all this, just think of the benefits of eating a natural food diet as your primary food intake and being preventative and pro-active in creating health in your body, mind and soul. If you donʼt already have a juicer now is the time to put this wonderful tool on your Christmas list for yourself or someone you love. I use the Green Juicer, a twin blade juicer that converts into a nut or seed grinder for making wonderful nut butters, nut juices, as well as a fruit and vegetable juicer and even a pasta maker! We make almond milk as well at home. There are a multitude of great juicers out there so pick one for your needs and remember it costs less to eat natural healthy foods, organic (recommended for Apples) and locally grown as well as making use of these foods in a multitude of ways. Once you start eating for your nutritional needs you will find your appetite has lessened as your body can utilize nutrition efficiently. Baked Apples make a great holiday dessert but nothing beats a good raw apple and they are abundant right now! ABSOLUTE HEALTH CHIROPRACTIC 95 CLIFTWOOD DRIVE NE ! SUITE C !
