The Lightning Thief Teacher Websites and Resources • http://www.theatreworksusa.org/uploads/studyguide/studyguide_1519.pdf Lesson Plan for grades 5-7. Packed full of activities and focuses mostly on establishing understanding of the different Greek gods referred to in the play. Includes a little bit of theatre etiquette at the end of the lesson plan. • http://www.visualthesaurus.com/cm/lessons/using-words-as-a-way-into-rick-riordans-the-lightning-thief/ A lesson plan that introduces students to vocabulary from the first chapter of The Lightning Thief. A good first lesson for a Lightning Thief unit that will help students pick up on themes and tone as they begin the book. • http://schooltimeseries.com/study-guides/2015-2016-study-guides/15-16_DC_lightningthief.pdf Lesson Plan for grades K-7. Includes vocabulary used in the play and 2 activities, one intended for a younger age group and one intended for an older age group. • http://www.mensaforkids.org/MFK2/assets/File/Teach/LessonPlans/Lesson_GreekMythology.pdf Lesson Plan for grades 5-7. Introduces the 12 major Greek gods and provides a lot of other information regarding the ancient Greek view of the world. Would recommend more for higher grades because some of the activities involve some research. The books that the plan recommends aren’t exactly necessary as most of the info that you will need for the lesson can either be found within the lesson plan itself or online. • http://mythologyteacher.com/documents/TheHeroJourney.pdf A .pdf explaining the Hero’s Journey story archetype. The Lightning Thief is a prime example of the classic story archetype and learning about the Hero’s Journey will help children identify the similarities between this play and other stories and movies that they know that also show the Hero’s Journey. • http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plan/lightning-thief-discussion-guide A set of discussion questions that can be used after seeing the play. These questions are based on the book so keep in mind the possibility that not all of the questions will apply because of the possible lack of detail in the play. • http://mythologyteacher.com/Gallery-of-the-Gods.php An illustrated list of the major gods and goddesses of Greek mythology. A great way to begin to introduce the gods and goddesses by giving students an image of the gods along with a description.
