The Biosphere Why is the biosphere so important to human wellbeing and how do humans use and modify it to obtain resources? In this unit you will learn about the factors that affect climate and will explore how different climates around the world create distinctive biomes (ecosystems). You will learn about the Tropical rainforest and Taiga biomes in detail, investigating the characteristics of them and the challenges they face because of climate change, acid precipitation and deforestation. Describe the global distribution of biomes. Construct a climate graph. Interpret climate graphs to describe the climate of the Tropical Rainforest and Taiga. Explain the factors that affect climate. Identify a range of resources people get from the biosphere. Describe trends in the demand for food and water in different parts of the world. Compare theories on relationships between population and resources (Malthus and Boserup). Explain how plants and animals have adapted to the climates of the Tropical Rainforest and Taiga. Understand why Tropical Rainforests and Taiga are threatened by climate change, deforestation and acid precipitation. Decision-making skills: Evaluate a range of options in order to decide the best course of action.
