Do-First: Write down the following definition onto the top of you handouts Academics • SWBAT Logistics: Write this definition down • Climate: temperature and precipitation at a particular location over a period of time. • Arid: Dry – Identify the factors that affect climate by completing a gallery walk. – IQP#11: Climate includes two things temperature and precipitation. Gallery Walk Process You will be traveling with a group. Your group will be given a number. That’s what station you start at. You working in ascending order. You will have 5-6 Minutes per station so you need to hustle! • • • • • • • Station 1- Continentality Station 2- Air/Prevailing Winds Station 3- Ocean Currents Station 4- Mountain Barriers Station 5- Latitude Station 6- Proximity Station 7- Elevation Latitude Definition: distance from the equator, lines are horizontal Explanation: It affects temperature by: closer to the equator, the hotter the temperature Prompt: Sketch a globe with imaginary continents. Draw the equator. Mark 5 places (1 hot, 2 moderate, and 2 cold) on the globe to show the temperature effect. 5 Latitude This image shows the major lines of latitude on Earth. 5 Air/Prevailing Winds Definition: winds that blow from a single direction over a particular point on the Earth’s surface Explanation: Because of the tilt of the earth, wind currents help create the different seasons, and brings moisture (rain). Therefore inside of continents are drier than the outside of continents. Prompt: sketch an imaginary continent that shows which part is arid and which is humid (rainier) 2 Air/Prevailing Winds Map of the Earth’s winds Effect of prevailing wind on a tree in western Turkey 2 Continentality Definition: the range of temperature from summer to winter Explanation: The farther away from a large body of water (think oceans), the greater the difference in temperature Prompt: quickly sketch an imaginary continent and label inland winter and summer temperatures and coastal (by the ocean) winter and summer temperatures 1 Continentality Coastal Side Inland Side 1 Continentality The red shows a bigger change in temperature (47° C) vs. the blue (8° C) Coastal Side of Alaska Coastal Side of Alaska 1 Ocean Currents Definition: Ocean currents are like rivers flowing in the ocean Explanation: Ocean currents from tropical latitudes have a warming effect on lands from the warm water, ocean currents from high or arctic latitudes have a cooling effect because of the cold water Prompt: Sketch the map of ocean currents. Make sure red is for warm and blue is for cold. 3 Ocean Currents Note: Make sure you show what is cold and what is warm on your drawing. Use the colored pencils 3 Mountain Barriers Definition: a landform, such as a mountain, that hinders or stops precipitation Explanation: High elevations such as mountains act as a physical barrier, preventing moisture from reaching the other side, creating deserts! Prompt: Sketch an imaginary mountain next to an ocean. Include all the descriptions and steps included in the Orographic Effect. 4 Mountain Barriers: Orographic Effect Windward Side Leeward Side 4 Mountain Barriers Caused by moist air rising over a mountain ridge, the cooler air at the top causes rain to fall, leaving nothing left for the other side 4 Proximity to Water Definition: how close a region is to a large body of water (think ocean) Explanation: The closer to a large body of water, the more humid the climate and the greater amount of precipitation. Prompt: Sketch an imaginary continent and label areas as humid, semiarid, and arid to show the effect of proximity to water 6 Proximity to Water 6 Proximity to Water 6 Elevation/Altitiude Definition: height above sea level Explanation: The higher the altitude, the lower the temperature. High mountains are among the coldest areas of the world. Prompt: Sketch an imaginary mountain and label the temperature from the base to the top. Include at least four temperatures. 7 Elevation/Altitude 7 Digital Altitude Map Red = higher elevation 7 Elevation 7
