Climate Notes 1. weather – is the day to day change in the air. 2. climate – is the average weather over many years. 3. precipitation – is all of the water such as, rain, sleet, hail, and snow that falls to the ground from the atmosphere. 4. temperature – is the degree of hotness or coldness of something such as, water or air, usually measured with a thermometer. 5. atmosphere – is the multi-layered band of gases that surround the Earth. 6. ocean currents – are fast moving river-like flows of water in the ocean created by the Earth’s rotation. 7. wind patterns – are ways that the wind flows over the Earth that are affected by the sun. (pg. 35) 8. windward side – the side of a mountain from which the wind blows (pg. 40) 9. rain shadow – the area on the side of a mountain away from the wind that receives little rain. 10. leeward side – the side of a mountain away from the wind. Climate is influenced by: elevation, latitude, winds, ocean currents, large bodies of water. Weather is primarily measured by temperature and precipitation.
