Overview (500 words max):
Marine and coastal ecosystems in Colombia in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea,
are source of many benefits for the local population at a regional, national and even in some
cases, at a global level. Moreover, this benefits constitute an engine for the economy in this
region, it also promotes tourism, transportation, fishing trading and trading post, among
others, creating thousands of jobs.
However, the importance and benefits from marine ecosystems in Colombia is not well
known, valued or included in the making-decision processes not even in social
consciousness. Therefore, integral economic valuation studies become an important tool to
put in monetary terms all the benefits obtained from the seas, to acknowledge its magnitude
and importance. Additionally, it is develop social consciousness and attain governments
committed to improve decision-making, territory use and development planning.
On the other hand, it is a fact a lack of acknowledgment regarding the use of ecosystems for
human wellbeing and economic development that are leading our nation to the deterioration
of ‘human capital’. Therefore, this has awakened people from wide world concerned about
ecosystems deterioration and the frequent loss of benefits from those.
During this symposium will present the importance of Colombian and Latin American seas
as sources of benefits for the population, as the contribution to ensure food security (fishing
and agriculture), jobs creation, protection against natural phenomena and erosion,
development of renewable energies and bioprospecting, among others. In addition, we
attempt to invite to this symposium worldwide leaders in ecosystem services with emphasis
in the marine environment.
Additionally, we are seeking to introduce the concept of economic valuation and natural
capital based on the investment in the marine ecosystems conservation, which is a very
profitable source for the nations with maritime territories.
Finally, the generation of social consciousness and novel tools that will raise awareness of
the importance of marine ecosystems for wellbeing, equality, economic growth and
development. We seek to improve the protection of the marine territory promoted from the
government, increasing the amount of research in the field, valuing these ecosystems by
including them on the development planning and national policies and by investing in
conservation to increase the value of ecosystem services.
