Energy is the ability to do work. Work is when a force moves an object in the direction of the force. Joules is the unit for energy and work. Types of energy 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Thermal energy Nuclear energy Mechanical energy Light energy Sound energy Chemical energy Potential Energy: is the energy of an object due to shape (elastic or spring energy) or position (gravitational) Examples: Bow and arrow, spring, trampoline, bungee jumping, rubber band, drum, diving board moon shoes, Kinetic energy – energy of motion 4 examples: ball rolling, jumping, running, driving a motorcycle, swimming, kicking, tapping, hitting, walking Energy transfer – is the transfer of energy from one object to another. How does energy transfer – conduction when one object hit another energy is transferred. (heat transfer) conduction, convection and radiation Example: Hammering a nail, Pushing someone, kicking a ball, jumping on trampoline, heating soup, hitting a tennis ball, bowling, hitting a baseball, Energy transformation (energy conversion). Energy will change from one form to another Examples: 1. Battery to a flashlight is chemical energy to light and thermal energy. 2. Food to energy. Chemical energy to (mechanical) kinetic and thermal energy. 3. Plants growing. Light energy to chemical and thermal. 4. Fan turning. Electrical to mechanical, sound and thermal. 5. Blow dryer. Electrical to mechanical, sound, light and thermal. CONVERSIONS ALWAYS END UP WITH THERMAL ENERGY as a by product. Spring Energy (elastic potential energy) – It is a form of potential energy due to stretching and returning. Examples: rubber band, bow and arrow, springs, trampoline, bungee jumping, sling shot Gravitational Energy. It is a form of potential energy due to position or height. Depends on what 2 things? Height and weight. Explain a belly flop from a low diving board and a high diving board. There will be less potential energy from a low diving board due to the lesser height. A high diving board will have large potential energy.
